Kyung Wha Chung - recommended

Posted by: Bert Schurink on 11 March 2015

I just listened to her Mendelssohn and was appreciating what I heard. I have now seen that there is a box from Decca and a BOX from Warner with her complete material so far.

Any of you familiar with her work and if that would be a recommended buy ? I have copied in the two boxes..

I have a few if her records on original Decca vinyl. I will check which ones. Very talented violinist and very well recorded.

Yes, highly recommended.  The Bruch disc with Rudolph Kempe is a classic.  All of the original LPs on the Decca SXL label are desirable and also sought after. Great performances and recording all round.  Of special interest is the original issue of the Prokofiev Violin Concertos (SXL 6773), the sleeve of which was hastily withdrawn and changed because it was a somewhat unflattering photo.

+1 for the Prokofievs. This is my favourite recording of these concertos.

Thanks for the feedback, I have just pushed the buy button for the already available Decca box...

I think there are many things to enjoy in her recorded output, not least the Cesar Frank/Debussy disc with Radu Lupu. I have most of her LP releases and I can honestly say there isn't one which I don't enjoy.

K-W Chung/R Lupu: Franck & Debussy

I have a few of her recordings, including this fabulous (and fabulous-sounding) Decca vinyl LP of Stravinsky and Walton with Previn and the LSO.

Her recording of Tchaikovsky's concerto with Charles Dutoit on Decca is my favourite version of that great concerto and I notice it's in the Decca box set. I think it's better than the version she recorded with Previn, which is the recommendation in the Penguin guide.

I have just ripped the last cd of the set - so I will soon have a listen to it, and judge for myself.

The Walton Concerto and the Saint -Saens No 3 are my favourites.  The Saint-Saens being the first LP I ever bought, a few months after starting to learn violin.  I should buy this set to listen to up in the home office.  Thanks for the tip off.
