Unitilite WiFi - dual band?

Posted by: DNO on 16 March 2015

Bought a new dual band router yesterday with the intention of giving my 'lite sole access to the faster 5Ghz band, but it only 'sees' the 2.4Ghz band; is this a problem with the 1 wall between the router and the unit (a distance of only 12 feet), or doesn't the Unitilite support 5Ghz?

Naim only have 2.4gHz - no 5gHz

2.4gHz is better than 5gHz for penetrating walls & has a better range in domestic environments

Ah, OK.  Thanks Mike. I note that it is only giving 10-15 more Mbps than the 2.4 band anyway, so it's not such a big loss I guess.

OK,  but if you want rock solid fastest possible & maximum quality - dump the wifi - ethernet is the only way

Yes, I know you're right!  Especially as I was also hoping the new router, which is exactly twice as fast the old pathetic one, would let me play 24/192...  It had me going for a while when I first tried it; and then it baulked - damn.

Mike is correct, of course - I would only add that plenty of us have discovered that a wired ethernet connection doesn't have to go all the way to your router to get improved results from a NAS or computer. These can be connected to your streamer via a switch, with only the router/internet  accessed wirelessly.

Well I'm intrigued but I don't fully understand Chris; my NAS is plugged into my router in the hall, and the streamer is in the lounge - can you be more specific for a newcomer to switches and things!

And don't forget the UPnP controller via wifi.. Of which if we use the Naim app we do not have a wired option. This is important to have a good wifi connection to.. A poor wifi connection will frustrate discovery and update messages.

Hi DNO

This link should help you get your head around it a bit more

https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...-and-switches-please

I found this forum a brilliant resource which really helped with my understanding and as a result purchased a switch and so far my Qute 2 / NAP100 / NAS streaming set-up has been rock solid. Not experienced any dropouts when streaming AIFF or FLAC  files.

Also do a search on switches and you'll find many other threads which will help

Good luck and have fun

Hi Nige

There are quite a few threads about this issue posted over the last year, so worth searching if you're interested. To get the basics right, though:

1. Is it REALLY not possible to set up a wired network by running some ethernet (CAT 5e or  CAT 6) cables round your house? Yes, it can be a pain drilling through walls etc, but it's the most effective, and cheapest way to get a stable network and the best sound quality.

2. If that's not an option, can you move your NAS close to your streamer? Then buy a Switch for about £20, and plug the 2 devices into it instead of your router, using whatever length ethernet cables are needed.

You will then need something like an Apple Airport Express, also connected to the switch. This gives you the WiFi connection which, as Simon says, you still need in order to use the Naim app for control, and also to keep the wireless connection to your router for downloads, iRadio etc. (Turn WiFi off on your streamer and chuck the antenna in the bin!)

A year or so ago, I was in a similar position to you, tearing my hair out trying to understand why my expensive Naim kit kept dying due to a poor network setup. Now it's sorted, thanks largely to forum members who pointed me in the right direction, and I'm sure yours will be too if you stick with it. Good luck.

Thanks for all your help.  I will read and learn, and may very well end up drilling some holes!
