MinimServer

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 19 March 2015

Since selling my UnitiServe, I've been playing music directly from the Synology NAS. I installed the Synology music server package, which seemed the easiest thing to do. In use, however, I've been finding the structure quite hard to navigate, even on the advanced option. I've set it to transcode to WAV, which sounds better to me, but there were two issues: gapless albums judder between tracks, and there is a .flac extension after every song title, which looks untidy.

Now, I'm a bit hopeless when it comes to IT, Asset won't work on Synology, and the installation process for Minim looked quite complicated. But after an hour of head scratching and tea drinking, Minim is installed.

What a difference! A lovely simple structure that makes finding albums really easy, no silly .flac extensions, no juddering, and much better album art. It's much faster in use and I'm convinced it sounds better, which I hope is not self delusion.

So, I'd say to anyone using a Synology NAS that they should give Minim a go. I would be interested to hear what others think of its functionality as well as its comparative sound quality against Synology's own server. Can the upnp software really make a sonic difference? Whether it does or not, it's a jolly sight better to use.

That explains why it works fine for me. It's an OSX bug and I use Windows. I would hope that it doesn't just look for folder, jpg but also - at least - cover.jpg and <album name>.jpg

I don't think that is correct Wat,   many of my .wav files don't have a folder.jpg as I've been deliberately not uploading them to NAS with high-res downloads & they all display perfectly.

Also I've edited the art in those without the folder.jpg line a number of times.

Indeed, it is not correct. It's the UPnP media server that will look for folder.jpg in the file directory, or embedded graphics or equivalent, depending on the server's capability or what you have set it to do. Some servers let you  set a precedence, ie embedded art has priority over folder.jpg. The UPnP media server sends the album and/or track artwork to the Naim app and the Naim app will simply display what it's sent in response to its request. (Or in some scenarios what it has buffered)

What do you mean by scrolling the files? What are you using for that?

While using the Naim app to scroll through my files some artwork shows but most only have an outline of a folder with the folder name under it. Once I play a song or album I can then use the Naim app to see the artwork and the other info it provides.

Minim is somewhat impenetrable, but once mastered is miles better than the Synolgy server. I'm sure Asset is great too, but of course it doesn't work with Synology.

Hi HH, glad to have helped in some way! Your solution seems slightly different to mine; I have band names displayed including "The", but "The" is only ignored for sorting purposes. e.g. I have "The The", shown just like that, without comma, but listed between Thad Jones and Thelma Houston in the artist view. I guess this shows the flexibility of Minim - you seem to be able to customise the view any way you like. Just as long as Matt Johnson doesn't disappear....

BTW, I have a Roberts istream in the kitchen; just checked to see if I have the same problem as you.....and I do. I only see <EMPTY> in the folders which contain FLAC files on the NAS, but have a couple of album folders in mp3 only. These are visible and play as normal. I only really use the Roberts for internet radio/ connecting the ipod, so hadn't ever noticed. Possibly something to do with transcoding (I have Minim transcoding to WAV), as the Roberts user manual implies FLAC is supported for UPnP.....

Hi Bilf, I hope you get to see this.

Simon has sorted this out for me. It is indeed the transcoding that stops the Roberts getting the files - flac files are fine, as are non-transcoded WAV files. The solution is to set the transcoding box to flac:wav/L16. The Naim gets WAV, and the Roberts gets L16, so everything and everyone is happy. You can see the thread on the minim forum - it took a bit of detective work!

Hi HH,

Just tried it and it works exactly as you said. Naim receiving wav, Roberts receiving FLAC and all working perfectly. I'm sure I wouldn't have found the solution; many thanks!

I was using MS with my Muso and getting on just fine.  As others have said it is not especially intuitive to use but I was thinking I marginally preferred the way it presented metadata to the Naim App over Asset.

Then we had a power outage about three weeks ago and now nothing I do makes MS visible to the Naim App and I can't replay my ripped CD's through the Muso. Am getting really hacked off with it, my Sonos units (running off the same library on the same NAS) were up and running again straight-away (and all tablets & laptops on the wlan work fine too).

Olly, first stop would be to confirm that MinimServer really is still running on your nas.  After a nas restart like that, you may well need to restart MinimServer manually.

I don't have my NAS set to reboot after a power cut. Where theres one another is sure to follow, could really stuff the NAS.

As Bart says i would see if minimserver is running. See if minimwatch is green.

Might be worth trying a reinstall of MinimServer on the NAS, as I had to do once or twice on my set-up on the rare occasion things seemed to go wrong. Otherwise, I've always found MinimServer to work very well over extended use, given frequent (and very fast) rescans via MinimWatch when I upload a new batch of music.

BTW, for anyone's who's interested, MinimServer also handles DSD files perfectly well into the NAC-N 272!

Andrew, have you a 272 under review?  I would so comments...

Excellent - it's always nice to get these things solved. I had no idea L16 even existed - it will work on the Naim too.

Yes, have had one running here for a couple of weeks now. First review to be published in the next issue of Hi-Fi News, on sale next week I think.

Thanks Chaps.

Wasn't a problem with MS running -I had restarted (more than once) and had a green tray icon.

Have resorted to uPnP server pre-installed on the NAS, which is a Lenovo and comes with a bundled version (of some kind) of  Twonky I believe (there's no ability to change or install over this but I can run a different server from the PC which as we keep on most of the time anyway is no big deal). This means I'm back up and running but artwork that was OK in MS is all over the f'ing place.

UPnP really is shite. I'm glad I tried a Muso first, I have absolutely zero appetite to spend £'000's on a Naim streamer based on my experience thus far. Sonos is immeasurably superior, Naim better SQ is little use if the App won't see my library or won't make a half decent fist of rendering the metadata. Have so far tried ths Lenovo bundled software, Asset and Minimserver - all flaky and immesureably inferior to Sonos which gives reliable service on the same network infrastructure.

i don't want to spend the little leisure time I have fannying around being a network administrator I just want to listen to music.

Rant over.

Great! Thank you! Maurizio

I now have Minimserver running on a Raspberry Pi, purely to access the new BBC Radio AAC 320kbps, transcoded from HLS to PCM and playing on the NDS.

That's four TLAs in one sentence!

I am enjoying the solidity, responsiveness and evenness of sound quality in Minimserver.  One issue I had was with the definite article in sorting, which I overcame by copying the example from the help screen.

However this seems to be preventing me from skipping to a selected letter of the alphabet on my NDX screen.  The line I have in Properties now is:

           Album.sortTags={Album, Artist},all.ignore.sort={The}

Has anyone come across this and worked out a solution?

Is this how you want it?

I don think you can... If you're letting the Naim App sort the entries it shows the A...Z entries.  On the other hand if you are following the server sorting (the A-Z selection is unlit) it doesn't.

Posted on: 26 April 2015 by Ears

Yes that's the sequence I want and am receiving from Minimserver HH.  So no problems there.

It's when I want to move away from the selected album to another that the skipping function of the NDX via its remote does not function (whereas it did before I inserted the extra code to ignore "The").

I don't control the navigation via a separate tablet or phone, because I'm content with just the NDX facilities.

Posted on: 26 April 2015 by Ears

HH, Eloise, thank you for the replies.  I think we must be referring to slightly different things, as my reply to HH will probably show.  Eloise, I'm assuming that the Naim App you mention applies to a tablet / phone, which I'm not using.

So it seems to be an issue between Minimserver and NDX firmware - unless I have done something foolish with my change.

Posted on: 26 April 2015 by hungryhalibut

I don't know how you cope searching for albums with the remote - to me, it's ok now and again but as the main way of searching for and playing your music it's a nightmare. I'd get an iPad, which makes searching for music a delight.

Posted on: 27 April 2015 by Ears

I expect we have very different requirements HH.  For me the remote works well because I have a relatively small number of albums to navigate, sit close enough to the small NDX screen, am not concerned about album art, and rely on the "jump to" facility.

iPad will be nice if requirements change, so I'll look forward to that.  At the moment I'd just like the "jump to" facility to come back.  Perhaps Phil Harris could comment on the situation I described in previous posts?

Posted on: 27 April 2015 by hungryhalibut

I've just checked on my SuperUniti and the 'jump to' function works perfectly. I will turn on the laptop later and have a look at how I've set up the 'ignore the' function in Minim and post it here. I suspect it's the way you have setup Minim rather than anything to do with the Naim firmware.

Posted on: 27 April 2015 by Ears

Very kind of you HH, thank you.
