Clock radio to replace 500 system
Posted by: 911gt3r on 23 March 2015
Dear Forum.
As age is creeping on and times are getting harder, I am contemplating replacing my 500 system with a clock radio. I am not expecting any great difference in performance, but would like to hear from other people having done this sensible move as to what clock radio to choose? Thank you Peter

I'm convinced my mum's old Teasmade radio would have knocked the spots off my 500/active DBL system. And you had a nice cuppa! What's not to like?
Dear Peter
I can recommend nothing with higher praise than the below. Alba produce some of the best 500 series rivaling timekeeping performance I've ever encountered. I'm not luck enough to have a 500 system, but I can't tell the time of day at all from my SN2, it's ridiculously bad in this regard. You might find the sound a little lean compared with your current system, but from things I've auditioned lately, I can only assume that's what most people want from hifi these days. Trust me, you can do no better.

Now there's a blast from the past
You will be telling me next that ou can still buy Ronco records
What about getting right back to basics and building yourself a crystal set radio?

Just put it closer to a wall and the lower register gets a real boost

To be fair, I'm not entirely sure that this particular model is still in production, but as you'll see if you investigate further, there's a vibrant secondhand market for products like this. You might pay a little over the odds for the Alba vs lesser manufacturers, but well worth the extra IMHO. It can even run of batteries in an emergency; it's practically a Hugo.

Thank you so much, I really really like the look of that beautifully designed piece. The sort of thing, which has the potential to bring ASPIRATION and hifi LUST back to this Forum. A lot of the heavy weights hardly ever post here anymore, and if we are not careful there won't be any people left, who has been on ' the beaten track' for the the last lifetime ( 30 years per definition). Graham Clarke is the only one this year, who has stuck his head over the parapet and good on him! ATB Peter

Just looking at the Alba again.
That tuning section looks similar to the Nat01, wonder if the same designer was involved in both products?

I'm a little concerned for you me old mate. I hope you're not disillusioned with the new speakers. No, more likely the 555.

You know, it may be. I admit mine is getting on a bit now, and this may not be normal, but when I adjust the tuning knob, which has a lovely feel to it BTW, Wally Webb starts to distort, and then it make this horrible noise for a little while, like a DAC-V1 does when you accidentally feed dolby digital 5.1, then you get an even worse noise, I think they call it Taylor Swift.
I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here, but I'm sure you'd be able to tell the difference between a 500 system and the Alba. To think that the Alba would be as good is simply not realistic. However, a Tivoli clock radio would be a different matter entirely. I suspect it's down to the wooden case, which is the same thing that PMC make their speakers from.
Hang on a minute, what am I doing in this padded cell?

Poor old Graham, if he reads this thread he'll be well gutted. What price a Statement now? Oh my, what a dilemma!

All depends what main cable you use
I suspect (and very much hope) because Peter isn't being entirely serious.
Really?
Really?
To my post or dayjay's about a mains cable on a Tivoli?

MDS, I think Peter's dreaming of something which has analogue and digital circuits which works on a fuss free basis It's a sad case when you're having your head examined.
