Filenames changed on NAS but can't sync to HDX-SSD
Posted by: robgr on 28 March 2015
Hi Forum, I've changed some folder names (album names) on my NAS to reflect the bitrate
However, I can't sync the changes to my HDX, I can see the changes on the NAS from Windows
I have a QNAP TS-212P running Asset, I've rescanned the NAS and the relevant folder
I'll confess I'm not entirely clear of teh mechanics here, what's relevant etc.
Does the HDX just refuse to see any changes to the folder names (album names) once uploaded?
Do I need to delete the folder on the NAS then rename on my PC and re-import again?
Apologies if I'm missing something but I'm stumped!
Hi Rob,
I think that what you're missing is that the HDX does not look at folder names at all. Folder names are irrelevant here.
First -- are you talking about cd's you ripped yourself on the HDX, or albums you've ripped elsewhere or purchased online, etc?
In either event, the album names don't come from the folder names. If it's a cd you've ripped on the HDX, you must use n-Serve to edit the album names. That data is located in an .xml file in the individual folders, but you must use n-Serve to edit it. If it's an album you bought online etc., the album name is in metadata embedded in the files. You need to use a metadata editor to change that info -- something like Metadatics for OS X and there are comparable programs for Windows.
Hope this helps -- happy to follow up!
You need to change the file's metadata, as changing the folder name won't achieve anything.
Many all thanks for your guidance, what's the best PC utility to amend metadata for downloaded WAV files?
Get dBpoweramp. All you have to do to change metadata is right click on the files when you access them via explorer. the programme will also convert formats and rip CDs.
Well done. Once you get the metadata right, everything works so much better. It took me ages to get my head around this stuff - you've got there much more quickly.
I did delete this post as I quickly realised that only 1 of 6 albums I'd amended was displaying tracks and I thought perhaps I'd misfired as it were.
However, a second rescan of the network share seem to do the trick, not sure why though!
I've now changed the album name on the NAS using dBpoweramp (great util), rescanned the network share and all is good in the world.
However, the HDX won't play ball if particular non-alphanumeric chars are used ([, ] & / in my case).
With an album appended with [88/24] it displayed as expected in both the web client and desktop client.
However, when displaying the tracks none are shown (desk top client) or 'No data available' is returned (web client).
A simple re-edit to just '88 24' (without the quotes) and all was well, had me foxed for a bit though.
What the limitations are in this respect, is it documented anywhere?
There is perhaps also a usability issue here, better feedback or a warning might help.
Again thanks to all for your guidance & patience with a newbie, this is a great forum!

The advice to avoid many non-alphanumeric characters has appeared here on the forum in the past. I've not seen any Naim documentation. If you find that tracks or an entire album won't show up, the first thing to do is to look at the characters both in the metadata and in the file/folder names. Characters like < or > in either place can bugger it up.
In my case I was having problems and a friend who's worked in the IT field for decades noticed the characters and suggested avoiding them. (This was when my uServe wouldn't recognize a backup folder with a space in the name.) He was right. His point was that the ability to use expanded character sets in file and folder names is somewhat relatively recent, and there is a lot of server software around that pre-dates. You still see a lot of people using the _ character instead of a space for this very reason.
Additionally, some non-standard characters actually are invisible. I was having no luck getting some album I'd downloaded to appear and Phil kindly logged in. He totally wiped out the folder name and renamed it identically, and voila it worked. He pointed out that there was a little space at the end of the name that was occupied by some invisible character that was messing it up.
