Advice on buying Naim from UK
Posted by: bicela on 30 March 2015
Dear All,
today my Italian dealer is informing me on the latest official price for 272, in UK is quoted 3300£, here we have to pay 5850€.
Considering today 1£=1.365€ the extra is 1345€!
VAT in Italy is 22%, in UK 20%.
I'm questioning if I can buy it in UK, what are yours comments?
How many year of warranty in UK?
Any comment is welcome.
What support means is to set up the unit at your home, make sure the system is getting the best from it, and provide support should anything go amiss. The supplying dealer would be your conduit for any warranty issues, factory support, firmware updates etc..
There's a lot more to it than just selling you a nice boxed up unit and saying goodbye hoping everything works out for the best.
Well, full retail price still only includes the dealers 20% margin. I wouldnt expect Uniti or X series to be delivered, unboxed, setup and listened to with nodding eyecontact acceptance.... If I bought a S1, NAC552 or anything above £10K....maybe.
We are in the European Community - it doesnt matter where you buy, just make sure its an authorized dealer.
My favored dealer here in Denmark accept the fact that byuing from his closest compeditor - or from another country is the same. And he surely agrees on the VAT issue (25%) wich for us can make it tempting to look elsewhere...
I usually buy 2nd hand, and let my dealer listen and adjust/repair - for a price we agree upon...

20% margin? Really?? I thought it was much higher otherwise how can they sell "ex dem" at such reductions?

...I bought XS series electronics (ND5 XS and Nait XS-2) and was offered installation and set-up by my local dealer. In fact I declined as I didn't need it (for many years I've set up and optimised systems for myself and others - and fixed some dealers mistakes!). However it was good to get that offer on what is just a mid price system.

Dealer margins are prob more like 40-50%....
ref different country pricing, we have the same 'challenge' in Switz, the Distributor/importer seems to determine the country pricing...so depends on how much he wants to make....however prices recently dropped due to CHF/€ rate....

I think dealers get ekstra discount on demo ex´es...
@Huge - Of course there are dealers running the extra mile for selected customers...and thank god for that :-) Personally I would´t have some dealer running round my house - unless we where on a
friend´ish relationship...
@ameden You piqued my curiosity.
Taking 8% MwSt off the CHF price of a NAP 250 and 20% off the GBP price yields a useful saving of 1,166.42 CHF. If you drive over the border and accidentally forget to pay the MwSt it would be a sniff over CHF 1600 which starts to get interesting.
My local dealer got in touch with me today, urging me to get a Supernait 2 just before the price rise. It was about 3500 euros (cheaper than in Britain...) it's now going to be just over 4000 euros (still cheaper than in Britain if you consider the present exchange rate...).
He was willing to give me a discount, and to take my Nait XS in part exchange. Unfortunately, I had to decline the offer - I feel I have spent too much on hifi this year already. It would seem that prices vary enormously from one country to the next.

Well the Swiss distributor isn't getting anything from me - I gave up looking at Swiss prices a long time ago (and customer service doesn't exist). I am driving to the UK today to buy an XPS2. The saving pretty much pays for the trip. I always pay the Swiss tax - I don't see how you can not pay it because you have to stop at customs to get the French stamp for the reclaim so the Swiss people always see what you are doing.
@Bananahead Most UK airports don't have an onsite person to inspect the goods and stamp the VAT forms, you just post the forms in a box at the airport. It gets stamped and returned to the retailer. I fly quite a bit so if I drive something back from the UK, I just post the VAT forms the next time I fly out of the UK. You have 6 months to make the claim.
Some dealers will just let you do a VAT free purchase in the shop. Mine did. They took care of all the paperwork and just shipped the gear to me 6000 miles away (obviously I was in the UK for the demo). Easy peasy.

Oh I see. I prefer to be honest.
I believe that within the EU, if you purchase a product in one country and pay the relevant taxes in that country, then no other country in the EU (or the Free Trade Area) has a right to levy additional taxes or customs duty on that product.

Sorry I just have to ask - it's been bothering me all day.
Who does air travel with a 15Kg Naim box (checked in or otherwise)? You can't exactly sling a SC under your arm and and stick it in the overhead compartment (or can you?). What about the fines for going way over the weight limit if you check it?
All the carriers I know allow you to purchase additional luggage weight allowance (up to a max weight of about 28-32Kg per item).
This is a lot cheaper than the penalty charges for overweight.

I can confirm that. It was very different 40 years ago when I got my first Naim (NAP120/NAC22): £300 + French duty @ 33%, as against 10000 FF in those days if bought in France (if you could find them...).
To answer the original post: the Italian price for a N272 seems very high, I have a feeling the price in France is lower, and France is much closer - it depends on where Bicela lives, of course.
I actually have traveled with a super unity... Place directly in a carry on suitcase using the stock foam insulators for packing. Worked great...

At one time I travelled with three Cyrus boxes and a pair of medium size speakers all in original packaging. I handed them in at the gate and they went in the front hold for collection when we landed.
But then some people flew some planes into some buildings and the world changed.
