Van Halen 24bit double dip, a la Rush

Posted by: Frizzlefry on 31 March 2015

Van Halen have just released the original 6 Roth albums in 24bit, for the second time.

Back to the original master tapes, for new (2015) re-masters, and if these improve on the sound any thing like the Rush downloads then I feel another double dip coming along.

However, when so much music is yet to be released, why double dip releases? At this rate ZZ Top, Billy Idol and the Ramones will be next.

The new masters are also out on CD and vinyl.

I've heard good things about the new hires 2112 but have only seen it on hdtracks in the US. Do you know if it can be found in Europe anywhere?

Prostudiomasters will sell it to you.

I don't think the 2015 release of in 2112 24Bit tops that which was out already but everyone is bound to have their personal take on this. Fly By Night 2015 was, I thought, better than the previous offering. Makes no difference here, I'll be getting most of them .

HiResAudio, based in Germany, also have it.  I have the previous version in 24/96 which is very good; the new one is 24/192 Which I guess should be better.  However, I bought the 24/192 version of Yes, 90125 and prefer the remastered CD; the DL is just too lean for my tastes.  I'm not sure whether the higher resolution version of 2112 will make enough of a difference to make me spend another £14 on it; I suspect not.  I was, frankly, a little disappointed with the recent Fly By Night issue.

You pays yer money etc........

I thought Fly by Night and 2112 were better than the previous 24 bit versions,  couldn't hear a difference on Rush Rush and in two minds on Caress of Steel

From their site : For the new 2015 remasters, the band enlisted mastering engineer Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering Studios. In order to produce the sound the band intended, Bellman cut straight from the original quarter-inch tapes.

On HDTracks The Collection has all 6 albums as showing re-mastered for 2015, like you say another set. I have the Warners/Rhino 192/24 6 album set from 2013 and they sound pretty good, even though rumours of them being up-rezzed seemingly nixed.

I might try 1984 2015 re-master, it is £14.99 as a 192/24 HiRes version on some UK download sites, or $24.99 on HDT (15% discount email out now for HDT making it to $21.69)

They played Jimmy Kimmel live last night, first TV live appearance with DLR singing, who was pretty poor (check you tube vids)

Just bought the 'Tokyo Dome' set on CD. Mmm, well, it has been 30 years.

Noticed that the new US 'The Collection' set is actually the 6 original albums, the live 'Dome' set, and the 2 songs from the hits album in 1996 (16bit only on the last two). But no 'Different Truth' album?

Let me know if you get 1984, and it's better Dan; if so, I feel the 2015 US collection coming on.

Oh, both the complete 2013 and 2015 sets, what about the 2018 40th anniversary sets - it's not cheap to live in Tokyo you know.
