transcode to wav in QNAP

Posted by: longmanjon on 01 April 2015

Hi guys, I wanted to try out transcoding to WAV from FLAC to see if it makes a difference in sound quality, there is nothing wrong with streaming FLAC as this works fine but like to tinker occasionally.

I have a QNAP TS-453 pro running twonky and a superuniti, but cannot find anywhere which enables me to transcode. I downloaded minimserver also to try but they do not provide minimwatch for this QNAP for the transcode part.

anyone been able to do this?

Friend of mine had a hard time with QNAP & tWonky

He changed to Assett & all is well in his world, & he transcodes.  Not sure how, as I don't know Assett, but he did it all by himself & that is saying something.

I expect a few other Assett fans will advise you to change & also how it can transcode

Yes - purchase Asset and install it on your QNAP.  It it's settings menu you can elect to transcode flac to wav.  Asset is pretty easy to install and configure!

+1. Asset lets you choose transcoding option by format.  One of my streamers is an old Denon AVR that can only play MP3 and WAV, so on-the-fly conversion of my FLAC music library has been very useful.

WAV may also offer a sound quality advantage over FLAC, but IME using an NDS, it is not exactly night and day.

Asset has a 30 day trial version, and there are easy to follow instructions on the Illustrate web site for downloading and manually installing the QPKG.

I would try minimserver. It has no problem with transcoding.

It shows albumcovers in the naim app when browsing your music file system.

Minimwatch is installed on your computer rather than on your NAS drive.

Once installed right click on the icon in the systray (it should have turned green) and select "properties" from the dropdown box. Select the "system" tab and the transcode box will be at the bottom.

Am using flac:wav24 to transcode from flac to 24bit wav.

Minimserver was developed for use on QNAP and it's very capable.

Why transcode to 24 bit?

It actaully sounds better like this. Ive no idea why it should alter the sound, and it is only a subtle difference. Im sure i read that all it does is pads out the 16bit signal with zeros to create a 24bit signal, whatever that means.

If your using Minimserver give it a try.

I have never understood why minimwatch should be needed. Why not provide the functionality from the web status page.
