NDX starts playing by itself

Posted by: retepqt on 15 April 2015

My NDX starts playing music by itself now and then. It has happened 5-10 times in the last couple of months, and initially I thought that I've simply forgot to turn it off, but now I know for sure that it starts playing for other reasons.

Every time it does so, it plays radio (Paradise), but since I'm a bit worried about this behaviour, I often set it to the USB/iPod input when I stop listening.

I'm aware of UPnP issues and vulnerabilities and that UPnP isn't designed to be used over the Internet, so I've checked my router to ensure that it wasn't enabled. I've had this issue with two different routers, both with UPnP enabled by default, but I've turned it off. I also checked the "GRC shields up upnp" service, but it reports that everything is fine.

Other reasons I can think of are smart phones with apps having an issue, and that someone with access to my wireless network plays a trick on me (though unlikely) or bugs in the NDX software.

I've disconnected the System Automation cable from the pre-amp because of the risk that the volume is turned up...

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Hi Peter - yes there's been a lot written about this here on the forums.  It's a bug in the firmware that will be fixed soon hopefully.  It only happens on the iradio input (if it happens at all) -- so just put the NDX on a different input when you're done playing . , . or put your amp/preamp on something other than the NDX.

It's not a hacker - just a bug in the firmware.

Thanks a lot! Didn't find the right search keywords, but "spontaneously" would probably have worked! I'll plug in the system automation cable again tonight...

I think this is the first report on this problem with NDX ......  I have never had the problem & probably never would as for no reason other than I don't know & habbit,  I always select FM Tuner before turning the app off;  FM Tuner means its switched via System Automation to another amp  input & then I always mute the amp.

So even if the NDX did turn on, I would never know it. Also whenever I open the app, I can only recall it being where I left it, on FM Tuner.

A question - when the NDX turns on,  does it awaken a hibernating NAS ?

I ask because my NAS wakes up on odd & for no reason occasions.

Mike, my nas never sleeps.  I think that it can take relatively little for it to 'wake up.'  It might be hard to correlate the two.

Hi Bart,  agreed,  but I have succeeded in keeping mine asleep pretty much all the time its supposed to;  I found both my PC being open that its Media Player woke it so I shut that down & rationalised network sharing,  now it sleeps pretty much all the time,  except these "odd" times.

Peter - although not probably not linked directly with your mysterious NDX auto turn on issue, don't confuse regular UPnP with the specific subset of "UPnP" we use for music streaming. Many routers need to support UPnP otherwise applications on your computers on your home LAN might not work correctly.

UPnP includes a set of protocols primarily for discovery and service enablement including on your router/firewall so the programs on your home LAN can work effectively.

Best leave UPnP on unless your are manually going to configure your firewall and all applications that require non standard ports. The same goes for Bonjour which can include a similar set of functionality.

Mike I've yet to find the proper "sleeping pill" for mine.  I'll keep searching!
