Recommend a great-sounding DSD download
Posted by: Bart on 15 April 2015
The Naim streamer software (beta) now supports DSD, and I want to try it!
Any recommendations for something that might truly 'show off' "the magic of DSD?" Yes, this is more about the technology than the performance. I want to hear this new-fangled technology and how it can change my life, make my whites whiter, etc.
These 2 was recommended to me. But they are downloads not streaming.
The doublebass sound is incredible

And this is a good combilation.

Bart-
I've been listening to SACD rips for the last few weeks and I can highly recommend Naim's DSD implementation.
~90-95% of the DSF files from SACDs sound truly excellent. I can highly recommend most recordings by Mobile Fidelity, Analogue Productions, Channel Classics, BIS, Hyperion, Telarc and most of the original Sony/RCA SACDs from the early 2000s and some Japanese SHM-SACDs.
If if you let us know what music you like and what country you're in I would be glad to recommend more music and sources.

Go the 2L label webpage, at www.2l.no, click the '2L brand store' pulldown top right on the homepage, and go to 'Test Bench HD audio files'
There you'll find the same tracks for free download in Stereo DFF DSD64 , which is what the NAC-N 272 will play, as well as 192khz/24-bit FLAC, so you can do the comparisons.
2L have been quite active with MQA as well as DSD.
If we are to believe Robert Harley's 13 pages of MQA coverage in the current TAS, MQA "delivers far better sound quality than that of any previous analog or digital technology, including 192kHz/24-bit and quad-rate DSD."
Thanks all! I'm in the States, and it looks like I can download from the 2L store. It's pretty much all classical . . . but the price is right for those samples. FREE
Some jazz, maybe piano trio, would be good too if there are any suggestions!
Cheers!
I also got a kind recommendation of A Love Supreme, which I read gets spectacular reviews. I'll invest $24.95 in that.
As you are based in USA, Blue Coast Records have a good eclectic range of artistes/music. I am sure you would find something to try. They also have a Youtube channel with samples to check out (Downloads NOW!) likely MP3s but at least it allows you to single out some music you may like to download in DSD from the main site.

Blue Coast also have some free samples to download which are pretty good.

I would highly recommend many of the Analogue Productions DSD jazz reissues on the Acoustic Sounds website. That is the most comprehensive online DSD source that I know of in the US.
Also, since you are in the US, I would be glad to rip a handful of SACDs for you. Investing in the PS3 to do so is a bit pricey and I've already ripped my collection of 200 or so discs, so now it is just gathering dust as I await a few new releases. I see your email on your profile - let me know if you are interested and I will send you a message.
HighResAudio in both Japan & Germany have a good selection of various genre in DSD........ plus the best pricing, way lower than the West Coast madness. Might be a problem d/l'ing to USA due to "regional restrictions", but various workrounds are available.
I'm a new David Elias fan thanks to DSD
Will someone please explain what DSD brings to the party? I can see that if there is a 24bit recording on DSD which has not otherwise been available in 24bit ( and some of the Bob Dylan stuff would interest me), but if you don't have a big SACD collection and the means and patience to rip it, where's the Beef?
IME, it is typically better than 24/192 and 24/176.4 recordings and just moves digital that one more step closer to perfectly replicating the analog sound. We can get into the technical weeds, but that is my layman interpretation.
The Mobile Fidelity Bob Dylan (& Miles Davis) SACDs sound great. Those are really why I went to the expense of buying a PS3 for ripping. It is a shame that MoFi has not moved into the digital download market. I have found many of their discs (and Analogue Productions) to be the cream of the crop.
Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Doors, The Band, Pink Floyd, CCR, Dire Straits, the Blue Note, Impulse & Verve reissues all get my highest recommendation.
Received an email today that the remastered Amused to Death will be available as a DSD download this summer.
Thanks Mark, and I am a big fan of Amused to Death. But is there any reason why a DSD would be better than any other 24bit version?

There is some good discussion about this (as well as very good technical background) to be found if you Google "DSD vs PCM".
I find the Ayre Acoustics site very informative and, like some sites mentioned above, their are comparison tracks for download.
As as far as my own ears go, with the beta firmware, I prefer DSD (Down sampled as Naim's implementation does) vs standard 24/192.
What is standard 24/192, and where can I get 'Amused to Death' in that format?

What does (Down sampled as Naim's implementation does) mean. Is it not DSD64 then.

My understanding of Naim's DSD implementation is that it is processed to 24bit/705.6kHz PCM before converted to analog.
If I am incorrect, will one of the more technical (and in-the-know) types correct me?
The Ola Gjeilo tracks from 2L are at least jazz influenced. Hifistatment, a German audio webzine, offers some free Downloads as well. Among these is one from Oscar Peterson.

Where does one get the beta software?
