Help for a HDX Newbie needing to set HDX to use DHCP

Posted by: prc68 on 18 April 2015

Hi,

Been searching around the forum, but haven't been able a full answer to my problem.

Just purchased an HDX 2nd hand and have not been able to get it to connect to the internet.

After reading a few helpfull threads have figured out that the HDX has been set to a static IP which is out range with my network allocation

The setip tool isn't able to find the HDX either.

So is there a simple way to reset the HDX from static IP to HDX or is it something that needs to be done at a dealer?

Thanks,

Paulo

Start the HDX with no network cable attached. When completely booted, shut it down from the front button.

Plug the network cable and start it again. It should be ok.

If not, ask for help at Naim (Phil) as it is quite tricky, and unless you are computer savvy, you should not do it and I will certainly not detail it here.

Hi Paolo,

I have been through the same hazzle yesterday. After having set it to static IP I went back to DHCP with no problem. I was not able to find the HDX with my Macbook and Win7 in Parallels. But with my wife's old Notebook and Win7 plus Set IP tool installed, I could find it. You need to give the tool allowance to pass the firewall though. After that, you can simply click DHCP and all should be fine.

Before all that try to find the HDX in the router menu. If it is not listed under network devices with its special IP, then it is not connected to the network and then Set IP will never be able to find it.

Where did you find it? eBay? How hold, how much, if I may ask?

Good luck

Chris

There is an iPad app called Fing that shows the network really easily.

Will update as soon as possible. Thanks again !

Hi,

Just an update as I finally got around to this during the morning.

Have had no joy. Tried what Manu mentioned and it didn't work. Also tried moving the internet connection from the unmanaged switch to router and could in no way find it in the network.

I will try contacting naim support for further assistance.

Thanks again,

Paulo

Using the remote handset, go to System then System Status (on the front screen).  You will see what the IP address is set to (e.g. 192.168.000.020).  The first 3 parts are important  (192.168.000.xxx).  Set the IP address on a laptop or PC on the same network to have an IP address with the same first three parts and a different fourth part (e.g. 192.168.000.100).

You should then find that this computer will see the HDX on its new network and you can run the IP address setting tool and change back to DHCP.

If you're not sure how to set your laptop/PC to a fixed IP address, just Google 'How do I set a fixed IP address'.  The way you do it is slightly different for Win XP, Vista, 7 & 8 (of course), so it depends what you're running.  If you've only got Mac's its a whole other way of thinking & I don't profess to be familiar with that world, But Google will be.

And, of course, don't forget to reset your computer back from the fixed address to DHCP !

...and finally, if this doesn't make sense, email Phil at Naim. He'll guide you through in less time than it took me to type this

Hi,

Thanks for your help. Tried the change and was able to find the HDX

Problem is that the changes are failing

I also tried restarting the entire network and got the following 1st time I ran the SETIP:

IP is the display ID. Was only able to get the error up once.

Getting a bit fustrated.

Tnanks again ,

Paulo

Have you tried to find the HDX using your router, which I assume is also your DHCP sever? If you can see it from there you might be able to change it's IP address. As a Mac user, I can't use the Set IP tool but using the router has always worked for me. In fact, once you've got this sorted, I'd suggest you use the router to allocate the HDX a fixed IP address from with it's  DHCP range - until I did this I could never get UPnP to behave reliably.

Good luck.

Hi,

Just an update from yesterday. Phil is the man

Sorted it out remotely. Seems the tftp error was related to me using my corporate PC instead of one of the home PC's. Everything sorted now.

Many thanks to everyone.
