U-Serve stuck CD

Posted by: Sdan on 21 April 2015

I have been loading CD's into my U-S. About every 15th CD it gets stuck. The method of paper clip in the hole has yet to work. My method is to touch the logo simultaneously shutting off power. I am afraid eventually this will corrupt the internal system. In the last week this has happened about 10 times. Suggestions?

I've loaded hundreds of CDs into my US and this has never happened once; nearly all these were used CDs. I'd get your dealer to check it out for faults.

Agree with ChrisSU, I've ripped about 1,500 CDs and not a single one jammed. Sounds like a fault to me.

I ripped over 2,000 albums and one got stuck, and only because it was knackered. The US needs looking at.

This unit is 24 mos old. Bought new. It had crashed one time and had to be serviced about 6 mos ago. Wiped out all of the music. Shutter the thought of more issues. Disappointing.

If it needs to go to be fixed, make sure you have a backup on a NAS. Then you can play the music while it's away. I tried listening to the NAS backup rather than the US, discovered that the NAS was just as good and sold the US. It's a good idea to convert your WAV library to FLAC, otherwise you will very likely have metadata issues in your backup.

I appreciate I will get hammered for saying this, especially by those who have had zero problems with their Unitiserve.

The Unitiserve, when it works, is an excellent piece of kit. No doubt about it. I had the SSD version, and it went back to Salisbury three times in 18 months. In the end, I just had to get rid, something I didn't want to do, as I loved it.

About 18 months ago, I spoke to a dealer, (who's name, and company I won't disclose) who said, "We've sold about 25 of these, and only had 7 go back". I thought that was bloody horrendous!!

It is time for Naim to sort the Unitiserve, or pull it's production..

How would one rip into NAS discs w/out the aid of the US?

On a connected Mac or PC with a disc drive and the right software you can get bit perfect rips. There are obviously a few choices to make with hardware, software and connections which you don't have to think about with a US.

Hi Sdan, the UServe Is basically a custom designed PC. There is nothing unique to it, except the convenience it offers. If you search the forums you will find pleny of opinion of what hardware and software to use in order to get bit perfect rips.

It's just, IMHO, more fiddly and hence the convenience and of a uServe or HDX.

7 out of 25 is a 35% failure rate. Completely unacceptable for something that is supposed to be an expensive, hand made, quality manufacture product.

I had a CD stuck when my UServe was about 18 months old. It had to go back to Salisbury.

If you have any playlists on your UServe, back these up too (using DTC),  they may be gone when your unit is returned.

I make that a 28% failure rate but still unacceptably high to my mind.
