Burning in a new SuperUniti-b

Posted by: RTod on 22 April 2015

I am in the very fortunate position of having my brand new SU-b installed this forthcoming Saturday and I would like to ask if any owners could advise on 'burn-in' techniques. I had a home audition which was amazing but now I have a brand new 'box' to contend with ...amongst other things ....like changing from A4 to Chord. Should I wait for cable upgrade ? Planning of filling up Atacama stands for my LS50's as well ...in the fullness of time,  of course ! But should I wait or take that 'Quantum Leap' knowing that it will, some day, all come together ? Yes, I am impatient but I am also extremely excited to welcome this lovely piece of kit into my home. Give me your thoughts, I'd really appreciate anything you can fling at me. I look forward to hearing from you

Personally I would wait a while before changing anything else.  The run-in time with Naim equipment may extent even beyond a month, depending on the extent of use. Let it settle down, see how things sound after run-in before thinking about changing anything else, otherwise you may be correcting something that did not need correcting, or enhancing something that ultimately shouldn't be enhanced.  Top tip, don't turn it off, ever if possible, except during a thunder storm, of course.

+1

I would recommend that you allow the SU to run in fully to establish a baseline level of performance before making any changes. Then I would only make one change at a time to avoid the problem of one positive change possibly being offset by one which might have a negative impact on sound quality.

Also, when making changes it is generally recommended where possible to go back to your original setup to check whether there has been a true improvement in performance.

Would agree with all thats been said and to add it took my SU around 8-10 weeks to fully run in, it sounded great straight out the box but really opened up after around week 3/4 and completely settled within around week 10, so just enjoy the ride, its a great piece of kit. To add I would recommend using Nac A5 speaker cable if at all possible.

My SU sounded OK at first, but it didn't reveal its full potential until I put it on a decent rack, and gave it a good network connection. I have various forum members to thank for helping me with that, if I hadn't made the effort to set it up properly I'd still be wasting it's potential.

Great stuff guys ! Thank you to all those who have posted advice.

Just a couple of points in passing :

1. Use NAC A5 ? I have metres of the stuff ( > 3m) and was thinking of Chord cable in time. Care to comment further ?

2. A good rack. Hmm, I can see where your coming from. Do you isolate the 4 corners of the SU on your rack.

My dealer advises me that the SU has Subwoofer out ! Can anyone expand on what/why/how please ?

In conclusion, I would say that the performance of the demo SU I had from the shop at home for a few days, far outstripped my expectations from a single box, even a Naim box ! I have lived with Naim since the early '80's and will be sorry to those separates go, it is time to downsize the number of units but not compromise on the SQ. I believe the SU will give me this.

I also downsized from a multibox system to SU and am still totally happy with my decision. If you have NACA5 then I would stick with it unless you want to spend silly money - it's excellent value. The only change I have made is to a Powerline mains cable. My dealer lent me one to try and it made an astonishing difference so he never got it back. Best to try before you buy though as the impact may depend on environmental factors such as mains quality.

+1 In agreement with everything said above including the introduction of a Powerline. I would however wait until your SU has burnt in / settled down using the stock power cable before giving a Powerline a trial. If you are going to use your SU over ethernet (advisable) then there is the slightly contentious matter of whether or not to use a quality ethernet cable, many here  claim the benefits of using Audioquest cinnamon. Once again I would wait and use stock cat5 or 6 cable  until your SU is burnt in, this is the only way you can assess new components. Certainly not for now but maybe down the line could be the trial of the new Super Lumina cable, something I am itching to try but it would obviously be a huge step up in the overall cost of the base one box SU system.

+1 on a Powerline, made a big difference but yes wait until it is fully settled in before trying any tweeks. NacA5 just works, I had a chord speaker cable left over from my previous system, 2x3.5 meter lengths terminated by the dealer, I remember is costing around £500 (1999) at the time but can't for the life of me remember which one it was, so not cheap! NacA5 just sounds right with the SU but having said that it is all subjective as with anything HiFi so you need to check out what you prefer as its your system so my be worth looking into at a later date? Hope that helps.

I've never added any isolation, glass, dome nuts, etc.etc. to my rack, or really understood the need. I bought a second hand Isoblue last year and it gave me a substantial improvement in SQ. I also considered Naim Fraim and Hutter, but they didn't really fit in my room, and I got a good deal in the Isoblue. Don't ask me to explain the physics, but it works.

As regards subwoofers, I'm very tempted to try one, but I'm keeping my mind open - it could be a disaster, a success, or anything in between, only trial and error will tell...
