ESKA is the most talked about, revered singer you've probably never heard of. Prepare to be let in on one of music's best kept secrets in 2015 when ESKA finally releases her self-titled debut album.
There is more to Eska's story than meets the eye. Once upon a time, she was also a girl whose parents became a primary school teacher and a midwife. She took violin lessons in school, and was so good she got a scholarship to a local conservatoire. Her talents for singing, arranging and writing got well-known in the industry; she left it to work on her own rich, warm, ambitious, genre-hopping music. Close your eyes and it sounds like it was beamed down from the more lavish days of the '70s; it's not retro, but adventurous, experimenting with structures and lyrics, big ideas and sounds, like many popular female musicians did then, like her heroes Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell. And then comes a voice to stop time...characterful, keening, intimate, extraordinary. This is all Eska too.
Having built an inimitable reputation as a writer and performer through collaborations with such legends of the game as Grace Jones, Cinematic Orchestra, Zero 7 and Bobby McFerrin together with performances in some of the world's most famous venues and festivals, it's time to discover ESKA's own unique sound in full force. The self-titled debut album ESKA hosts production credits from cult British electronic artist Matthew Herbert (known for remixing BjÖrk, R.E.M. and Yoko Ono), Louis ‘slipperz' Hackett and Dave Okumu of The Invisible (previous winners of iTunes ‘Album of the Year' in the UK.)
Eska has already banked six exclusive streams from the likes of Noisey, Complex, Stamp the Wax, Rookie Magazine, The 405 and notably Boiler Room with the ‘Heroes & Villains ‘premiere amassing 42,000 plays. The Sunday Times Culture section named Eska as their "Breaking Act" and this recognition has been reflected on the airwaves with multiple plays on BBC 6 Music, Radio 2, XFM & NTS Radio.
Her debut album has already had an overwhelming reception in a number of publications.'Eska' has scored a 4* in Q magazine & Hi Fi Choice, 8/10 in Uncut, Music Week tastemaker, Sunday Times Breaking Act, Tune Of The Month in Mix Mag, a two-page spread in Echoes and described as "empowering to listen to and the whole album is a wonderfully emotive affair" by Time Out.
Eska's ESKA is a record full of wonder in itself. It is a record to pore over for hours, days, weeks, a lifetime. It is a place where you can lose yourself in the details, and Eska's rich, warm ambition. It is a record made by an ordinary woman with an extraordinary talent, spreading her wings at last, letting go, taking flight.
