Upgrade my Qute with new speaker cable?

Posted by: Tom Mitchell on 23 April 2015

I'm really quite fond of my simple setup:

UnitiQute with Rega RS1's

Was wondering if you guys thought I should upgrade the cable?

An audio buddy suggested:

ChordCo SilverScreen     or    Rega Duet

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Hi Tom

i have found the Naim A5 cable to work superbly with my Rega Jura speakers in the past, and they are, of course  optimised to use with Naim equipment.

I agree with your comment about this forum. as a resource, it can lead to a constant feeling of dissatisfaction with our existing, very good setups. This can  only be relieved by spending yet more money on "Improvements", which only give a temporary respite. Welcome to the "audiophilea nervosa"forum.

Still, all in all, it's lots of fun and very educational.

I would first look for ways (if possible) to get the speakers off that cabinet & on stands & get some distance between them. You will probably get much more SQ gains in that direction than changing cables.

Don't put your money into screened speaker cable,  more bang for buck in other places

I would also look for a cable size one size up from Chord Silverscreen,  Chord Odyssey with 12AWG (3mm/2) is a better choice & sounds really good too.

Naim NACA5 (can't not have NACA5)

Rega Duet

Black Rhodium Twist

Hi Tom, I agree with Mike regarding some speaker stands, I think you would be quite surprised by the difference in sound quality.

Good luck.

+1 to the comments above. You're not going to get away with posting here without being told you should be using NAC A5, although there are plenty who like Chord as well. Try to borrow some from a dealer then you can decide for yourself.

Put the speakers somewhere else! Not only will they perform much better, but your Qute will also improve if the speakers aren't shaking it about on that heavy cabinet.

Obvs NACA5, but if you're looking for a much lower cost alternative then try Van Damme Blue 2.5mm. It's excellent cable. Perhaps not quite the equal of the Naim, but pretty darn close (unless you're using high-end gear) for a tiny fraction of the cost. I always recommend people to either pick the Naim if they have the cash, or Van Damme if they don't. You won't go wrong with it.

+1 to Mikes comments.  Sort out the supports for the speakers and Qute first, give them good supports and let them have the opportunity to show you what they can really do.

For the list of candidate speaker cables I would add Audioquest 14/4 SLiP.

+1 to this. If the speakers have to remain on the cabinet, try Black Ravioli feet. They do a great job between speaker and cabinet, but at a cost of $34 per piece (you'll need 8).

+1 Getting a bit repetitive now, but for the record I agree with all of the above, either stands, or some kind of feet / support will help as much, if not more, than changing the speaker cable.  Really, it will.

Of all the upgrades/tweaks I've made over the last year to get the sound where I'm at now, the biggest was new speaker stands (started with a UQ1 which now serves just as source).

For cables get a full loom of nordost purple flare. Will look Bonny against the coloured wall and cabinet and will see you through some upgrades.

What when he re decorates??

As above with stands etc but in terms of cable Chord Rumour 2 works very well with the Unitiqute.  I wouldn't get the Carnival, the Qute will benefit from a higher quality cable

Seems there is total agreement to get stands.  After that I question (no disrespect) if your set-up is going to allow you to notice a difference in better speaker cable.  I suspect it will not.  Maybe getting a sonos or something (via digital out) to replace the apple TV would be a better use of money?   I assume your files are lossless

Not sure I see your point GregU...

I'm guessing the AppleTV is just for AirPlay of some things (such as Spotify from an iDevice) or audio from Netflix (but I don't see the TV!).

The Qute can stream all the lossless files from a home network by itself without resorting to Sonos.

I may have missed something in your suggestion, though.

I changed from bog standard speaker cables to K20 with 'just' a UQ2 and absolutely did notice an improvement. My subsequent change to A5 was after I'd added a power amp, but I'd still expect to hear a difference without one.

The speakers may be comparatively modest, but I certainly wouldn't rule out speaker cables making an audible difference. After following the above advice, of course.

Well   I'm not sure what the Apple TV is doing there !!    My main point is I don't see spending money on speaker cables here

Buy an entry level TT and used phono pre-amp

I love my Tellurium Black cables , to my ears they elevated my system , it was like lifting another veil to see the sound  more clearley

also agree with moving your speakers to stands , they do make a diffrence

Okay, if this many people are saying Speaker Stands, then Speaker Stands it is... I'll get some this week. Really excited about hearing the difference, I bet it is going to be good!

p.s. Yes, the Apple TV device is for Airplay streaming. So convenient

Thanks guys!

Now you have the question of what speaker stands, and high or low mass!

Always more decisions!

I use Analysis Plus Speaker wires with my Qute.  I am using the oval 12 with good result.

My Dynaudio Stand 3X stands can be filled with sand or some such . . . but I haven't done that.

I use Custom Design CS104 Signature, filled (to 80%) with a mixture of granite chips and MaFeic sand (i.e. black volcanic / basaltic sand), this mixture is about 50% to 60% more dense than just using normal yellow sand.
