What are the most beautiful/lyrical genre independent melodies that have ever been composed ?
There are many, but i I have to pick one. This.
Yes, there are so many. It's funny, but when I heard the Beethoven melody in Kuma's clip, starting at the 5th measure, I was immediately reminded of another of the most beautiful melodies: Bernstein's Somewhere ... I wonder if he was referring to the Beethoven here?
The Adagio sostenuto of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 is very lyrical.

This is one of my favourites.

Exactly, I have often thought the same, to close to be a coincidence I think .
Todd Rundgren was a great balladist.
I love this 1971 album 'Runt: The Ballad of Todd Rundgren' and particularly love the Wailing Wall.
Debussy; Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune

Steve Vai- For the Love of God ... actually sounds quite celestial to my ears, and builds to a wonderful climax...
Fatcat,
Nice track from Judee Sill. I've loved her music since I was a student back in the mid 70s. Almost anything by her could appear on my list.
However, I'll choose "Wind Words" from Stomu Yamashda's "Freedom is Frightening" album for now - A hauntingly beautiful piece of instrumental music!
Keith Jarrett, Tokyo 96, Never let me go...
Rachmaninov, Fantasy on a theme of Paganini
Holst - That famous melody from the planets - is it in Jupiter?
Beatles - Here , there and everywhere and In my life
Brian Wilson. Don't Worry Baby or God Only Knows.
