Record Stores in Manchester
Posted by: Ralf2013 on 01 May 2015
Hi there,
next week I will travel to Manchester. I will have free time for half a day and like to visit one or two record stores for second hand vinyl. I'm mainly interested in Funk, Soul and Rock.
Could somebody give a piece of advice?
Thanks, cheers
Ralf
Perhaps a bit far away but there is a good vinyl shop in St Helens which is around 30 minutes away from Manchester
Vinyl Exchange on Oldham Street near Piccadilly Gardens in Central Manchester. Further out of town (Chorlton) there's Kingbee Records on Wilbraham Road or north of the city towards Bury there's Endless Music at 377 Bury Old Road, Prestwich.
You should be able to find their websites online.
Funk and soul amply served by the rather wonderful Beatin' Rhythm on Tib Street. You'll do well to escape without multiple purchases and a long conversation at the counter. I don't know how you're travelling but it's a short hop to Huddersfield and an equally wonderful shop in the centre of town - Wall Of Sound.
Kingbee is a hipsters paradise. Can be very annoying. Vinyl Exchange is hit and miss but I find less and less there nowadays.
Piccadilly Records on Oldham Street too. Endless Music is Prestwich looked like it had closed down when I drove past a couple of weeks ago. If you are planning to try that one I'd call before setting off.

Ian,
Endless Music moved from Bury New Road in Prestwich village to Bury Old Road (the Heaton Park side of Prestwich) a while back. Did you check out the newer address?
Endless are fairly mainstream. They do rock but you won't get much in the way of soul or funk there. Beatin' Rhythm alone for that. Piccadilly are overpriced and possess some of the most dour, miserable staff you'll ever meet. Plenty of interesting Rick there though. Very little soul or funk.
Thanks sjabbey. It was the village I was passing through and I didn't realise they'd moved. I don't buy much vinyl and hadn't visited them in a couple of years.

Bless you, sjbabbey, for reminding me of this great place. I grew up in Chorlton and still have a number of CDs I bought from Kingbee over 20 years ago, some still with the bright yellow price tags on. Discovered some great groups by browsing there, such as Frazier Chorus.
Does it still smell slightly disreputable? I do hope so: that was always part of its charm.

Have only made the trip out that way the one time as I''m out in Bury. As the metro-link trams now go out that way I hope to get there more often. I've good friends who are based near Stockport who are into reggae and they put me on to Kingbee.
