naming in dbpoweramp

Posted by: Honeyquince on 01 May 2015

I've finally made it into streaming audio and have bought dbpoweramp to rip my cd collection to flac. Overall I'm pleased with my modest setup using a Raspberry Pi to serve up files to my Beresford dac. My question though is how best to set up naming in dbpoweramp for classical recordings. At the moment the default setting is to prioritise artist which works great for pop but not classical. Has anyone worked out the naming sequence for classical that works - I live in fear of getting it completely wrong and having to re-rip a bunch of cds following a failed process of trial and error. I seem to remember a post from many years back but for the life of me can't find it in a search of the forum.

Many thanks for any thoughts and experiences.

Robert, naming is a personal preference ultimately i.e. you'll need to determine whether you want the album artist to be 1) Solo Artist/Performers 2) Orchestra 3) Conductor 4) Other...   You wouldn't need to re encode, but you would have to change all the tagging on the files, but one could argue re encoding could be quicker...  You will also need to decide whether to list the year as the year of the recording (that's what I choose) rather than year of CD release.

This is the sequence that I use for all CD's

Set folder location, then :

[album artist]\[album]\[IFMULTI][disc] [][track] - [title]

I also enable the AccurateRip and Secure mode, but that does cause some CD to take a long time to complete, normally one of the last tracks on the disc.

One thing to check when encoding is that 'Compilation' isn't ticked, otherwise it will not end up in the Album Artist ( as per above ) folder.  In addition, when comparing Metadata think about is this disc 33/50 or is it really 1/2 in part of the set.  I use the Comments section to list boxset info i.e. "Decca Sound - The Analogue Years - 50a" which is then searchable/sortable in iTunes and others, I just keep the info in Notepad and copy it in.

I also Multi encode to save to 2 formats -  Flac - Lossless uncompressed, so it maintains all tagging and Album cover and 320k MP3 as this is what my car can play and iTunes can stream through the house. So think of your needs too.

I will say though, that you will spent a lot more time editing/updating/changing Classical CD information than any other genre when ripping so patience is a must, as is giving the CD mechanism time to cool down every once in a while.

Robert,

i too have found that I have to review the tags for ripping classical CDs using dbpoweramp. Always. For non-classical it is right nearly all the time. You can use MP3 tag to fix the things up after the ripping. I have never found a need to re- rip unless the was a problem in the rip process. Remember it is not the physical file location but the tagging that is important for Nstream.

i suggest you rip a couple of CDs and experiment. warning, box sets are a nightmare....

best of luck after recently ripping the Glenn Gould complete jacket collection,

Robert, the naming is down to personal preference and doesn't matter that much. I tend to put albums into thier own sub directories .. Easy to do with dBpoweramp.

Its the meta data that is more important.. And how your UPnP media server handles it along with your controller.

i am a recent Minimserver convert (Having used Asset for severeal years) I find dBpoweramp, Minimserver, and the Naim app make the best combination and works well with compilations and classical music albums. I also use my Pi to host Minimserver.

I rip with dBpoweramp into .wav & don't worry too much about naming or tag editing other than making sure the metadata is captured OK during the rip.

Once ripped & loaded in the NAS,  I then accept the dBp generated folder, rename it or make a new folder to my preference & I do this from my PC - Network > NAS view in Windows Explorer.

My preference is to file classical under composer - if I have two or more versions of the same work, then I edit the tag to make sure either the orchestra and/or conductor is visible.

With rock, jazz etc the folders are listed by artist, much as dBpoweramp does automatically.

The compilations - yes we all have them - is either classical compilations  or whatever,  that to me is an annoyance I just forget about.

Final point is I nearly always browse by folder in the Naim app with Synology Media Server.   I'm not at all bothered about album art cover to find what I want to listen to rather than look at; & folder view is the same directory tree as in Windows Explorer

Hi there and thank you for the replies and perspectives. I'm reassured to hear that naming doesn't matter too much as long as the metadata is fine. I've ripped a few cds with my preferred naming sequence and they seem ok (well two out of three aint bad lol). I've also had a look at both mp3tag and minimserver. Both look interesting though minimserver looks like it might be quite a challenge to get it up and running (I struggles a bit getting my head around Volumio on the Raspberry Pi).

Simon - does the NDX allow you to use the Naim App with Minimserver data - I'm guessing this gives you a nice useable  front end for the minimserver? Would I be able to use it with a bare Raspberry Pi directly into my DAC and if so what would the user interface be like. I'm currently using voumio through my Android phone and so far it seems to work pretty well and looks quite nice though the lack of cover art is a shame.

Thanks again everyone!

Hi Robert... Minimserver is not difficult to set up on the Pi, assuming you have mounted the NAS volumes... And this is exactly the same as for Asset... There are plenty of guides on the web to show you how to do this If you need assistance here. But Minimserver or Asset is only relevant for a UPnP media Network Streamer like an NDX. and yes the Naim streamer iOS app works really well In this mode.

If you want to stream SPDIF directly from the Pi, you will need one of the variants with additional hardware that provide a highly stable SPDIF output.. I have not tried this, but I think a few on the forum have. If you go this route you want be able to use the Naim apps.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for this explanation which makes sense - seems the obvious thing to do would be to buy a Naim product (as always!) but will have to plod on with the bare pi for the moment until cash flow allows. I'm sure it will prove to be a positive learning experience. I am getting nice music from it I just need to sort out the tags.

Talking of which I've been looking for mp3tag but am finding it difficult to find the definitive version. Timster, could you confirm whether it's version 2.70 and the site to download it from has a German mirror site? All very cryptic but I don't want to fall foul of the forum rules regarding links.

Many thanks again!

Robert
