mulfunctioning app
Posted by: Econjp on 13 May 2015
the Naim app on my iPad (suddenly?) got stuck on finding rooms and as I haven't set up any it doesn't want to move on and allow me to play music from my server (both twonky and asset); at the same time it seems to be working fine both with my iPhone (4S) and manually... I upgraded iPad's software and reinstalled the app but no result... It almost looks like there is no connection between iPad and my NDX although they are certainly on the same network... HELP!

I suggest you turn everything off, then turn on your router, wait for it to settle, then turn on the server, wait a bit, then turn on the the NDX, then your iphone and ipad. I hope that helps.

I had a different but maybe similar thing this morning, it would switch between & play iRadio, FM Tuner & USB, &although it would switch to NAS, it froze on the last screen it worked on. I cleared both cache's & it was fine, I would try that. Then if that & David's suggestion don't work, I would try the app reset function, & if that doesn't work or if you are frozen out of that function, delete & reinstall the app.
Thanks a lot... Cannot do anything with the app - all that it wants and is prepared to do is to set up mu-so, which I don't have... I have already restarted the streamer and the server, so I guess it is time to try the router... Will let you know...

If you are on the Muso set up screen - try touching the X in the top left corner, that should take you to a screen with your streamer & its IP Address, then touch the arrow top left, then touch the streamer picture & you will have all the inputs screen.
If it does not go to the streamer with IP Address then I would look into the router & its DHCP function, but if it works OK with your iPhone its not DHCP. Delete & start over is the only thing that makes sense to me
What I usually get (and now also on my iPhone) is one screen before the mu-so setup... I can get to the mu-so setup one and back but this is about it... The router seems fine, the NDX is hardwired... Really don't know... Will try to disconnect and reconnect everything again but it all reminds me of reinstalling windows over and over again...

The thing that sorted everything out for me was to attach the server and streamer to a switch, add an airport express (also on the switch) and set it up as a dedicated Naim network.
The screen before Muso set up should say Rooms in the middle at the top (on an ipad anyway) and Below the word Rooms you should have a picture of any Naim streamer you have on the network. Clicking on that picture takes you into the menu to select inputs etc.
if there are no pictures there (and certainly if there used to be) then it suggests to me that either the network can't see the streamer, but that can't be the case if you can play music from your server using the remote control to control the streamer, or possibly that your ipad/iPhone is getting too weak a wifi signal to be able to talk properly back to the streamer. I assume you do have a nice strong wifi signal where you are trying to use the App? If in doubt go close to the router and try from there.
and if you restart the router, you should then also restart the streamer after the router has settled, in case it allocates a different IP address to the one it allocated before.
if none of this works, I would give the support guys at Naim (see sticky above) a ring. They will undoubtedly have other suggestions.

The screen that I am getting has only ROOMS at the top, "..." in the top right corner (which takes me to "Add rooms manually"), "no rooms found" in the middle and "add new mu-so" and "+" at the bottom... It seems like mu-so or nothing... Wifi is fine, it is all pretty close, and as I said, it works with the remote control... And, maybe it matters, I have a separate router for Naim and music, not my proper internet access...
David, How do I get in touch with Phil Harris?

SUPPORT If you have a specific problem that you wish to obtain support for from Naim then please contact either Steve Hopkins or Phil Harris on support@naimaudio.com or telephone 01722 426600 and we can make sure that we attend to your query as quickly and efficiently as possible...
Thank you very much!

Adding a room manually isn't "mu-so or nothing": you get to enter the IP address of your naim device and select the appropriate product type from a menu. I don't know if this will help in your situation, but it worthwhile to try since this process avoids the autodiscovery step and, since you have network connectivit, you may be good to go. Triple checking that your iPad is really on the same wifi network as your naim and the functioning iPod also worthwhile...

Hi Alan,
you are right... the screen is a tad deceptive but if you put in NDX instead of mu-so as your hardware or equipment and then add its IP address, it suddenly discovered the streamer... it all looks now a bit different but at least I am getting something (a starting point for more adjustments? ;-))
Thanks a lot...

I'm glad you have sorted this out with Alan's help. But it does beg the question as to why your iPad App couldn't find the streamer without your manual intervention.
if you are inclined to try to answer that question, a good start may be the posting from Phil Harris which is near the bottom of the list of sticky postings in the Streaming Audio forum. It's called something like Discovery issues with Spotify, UpnP etc and it explains how it all works and suggests an iDevice App you can download from the iTunes Store for a small amount of money which can help you see what is going on.
good luck!

David,
thanks, will certainly try, the more so as the app isn't seeing all Upnps... My server (QNAP) comes with its own software (music station), Twonky and I added asset but right now it is only Twonky that is visible... All in all, we had our NDX for like 14 months and when it works it is great, especially with 24 bit tracks but sometimes one is tempted - and my wife certainly is - to conclude that it is not worth the effort (and frustration). With 12 TB of music I think I have to persevere but... ;-)
Will try (again!) to find these sticky notes but ultimately the puzzle is what it all (sort of) worked fine and suddenly stopped....

By sticky I mean the Featured Topics that come before to Topics list in the Streaming Audio page of the forum. Easy to find!
Did manage to find it and didn't have to invest in the app - already had it... All of this is a little beyond me, and in particular what isn't clear to me is the relationship between the diagnosis and possible remedial actions... Was trying to have a separate "music" router (admittedly, an old BT one, because just got FTTH and was able to ditch them), with servers and the streamer hard wired to it and iPhones and iPad logging into this network only for the purpose of using the Naim app... It has just occurred to me that perhaps the app got updated and this is why everything had to be reset? Typical...
Best and thanks for all your help
