BBC website

Posted by: Christopher_M on 18 May 2015

Hi,

One day last week I was offered the chance to try the new BBC website on my steam-powered Macbook. I clicked the button.

The new site looks like it's more for mobiles and tablets. It's not so good for me with my desktop. But can I get the old site back?! No.

The new site is mbbc.co.uk and the old one is bbc.co.uk.

Please can you help. Thanks.

The new design will rollout in the coming weeks anyway so you might as well get used to it now.

Is there a yellow band across the bottom of the page with a 'take me back to the old site' option?

Thanks ChrisSU, no there isn't.

I'm guessing it only stays there for a bit. If you're desperate to get it back, you might be able to by trashing BBC cookies, clearing your cache, history etc. then going back to the BBC site. Sooner or later, though, I imagine, as Bananahead says, that the new site will take over. Resistance is useless..........

I had the same issue last week, but was able to revert to the old webpage, though, as noted, this option seems to have disappeared now.

If you enter "www.bbc.co.uk" in Safari, you'll get back to the old style page, which you can then save in your Top Sites, for as long as it lasts.

The new page is actually "m.bbc.co uk", which might suggest that it is indeed meant for tablets etc.

I hope so, as it looks crap on my MacBook too!

Regards,

Dave.

Now doubt another decision by committee steered by focus groups dependent on the feedback survey pop ups which surface periodically. Though these rarely seem to have the options in the range of answers I'd like to give, including but not exclusive to:

Inane
Drivel
Couldn't give a monkeys
Absolutely not and never would
Only if I were aged 5
Not if you paid me

I'd suggest you dump the mac and get something decent like a PC.

I don't seem to have a problem accessing bbc.co.uk from my PC, google BBC and the link popped up.

In fact it wasn't that easy to access BBC mobile, googled MBBC, BBC mobile didn't appear as a search result, but the link was at the bottom of page under related searches.

No problem with cookies, I then googled BBC and the bbc.co.uk link appeared.

Pull yourself together.

Some months ago BBC refreshed their news app (Android). New layout is bloody awful. Deleted the app.

Some months prior to that it was the met office website. Previously it gave a very good 5 day overview in a single page view. By refreshing a single page and watching how the prediction changed over a few days you could get a good idea of how stable the current weather pattern was and thus a good prediction of what the weekend would be like. The new site has a shit load of information, so much that they've had to put each day on a separate tab. Now it's a total pain in the arse to use, so I don't.

And let's not forget Hoopla! Every time I refresh the forum on my phone it reverts to their mobile optimised version. Not sure what sort of a mobile it's been optimised for but certainly nothing I've encountered in the past decade. Maybe we should have a whip round and buy them a phone so they can see how shit it is and turn the bloody thing off.

In the US, bbc.co.uk will be re-directed to bbc.com, and it is the new site. I like the look of it, but the rolling news is now missing - That is a pity because this is the best feature of the BBC web site,

I don't like recent changes either, especially the the News site.  There's far too much emphasis on videos - I want to read the stories whilst I'm having my cornflakes, not be forced to play endless clips of video.

Thanks all, just gonna suck it up.
