IOS app 4.5 now available
Posted by: quickben on 18 May 2015
Appeared on my updates on the iPhone this afternoon - loaded but have not had chance to check the bug fixes
Doesn't in and for itself enable one to fix the clock problem. But, who knows, maybe it's an enabler awaiting a firmware update.
Several fixes including:
now playing bar at bottom screen disappearing
the daylight saving time prompt will no longer appear for older equipment
Rovi database made more accessible
Ability to add more than 500 tracks to a playlist
plus a couple of crash fixes.
"Ability to add more than 500 tracks to a playlist"
Hooray, at last! But what is the new limit?

Just checked the 500 limit still applies
I'm assuming that you've installed the new app and tested the playlist limit.
The release note actually states:
"Fixed: Able to add more that (sic) 500 tracks to a playlist when adding from another playlist"
no info about any other limit.

Yes installed, but can't create playlist greater than 500
Hi John,
Not sure what the "when adding from another playlist" qualification is about.
Have you tried creating a second playlist and then adding that (or tracks from it one at a time) to an existing playlist which has 500 tracks?
It seems an odd way to go about things but it might work.

That'd require a firmware update; the clock runs on the player.

Just to be clear, what I want to do but can't is create a play queue greater then 500 tracks but there still seems to be a 500 limit

My understanding is that long playlists created on other devices such as NAS/UPnP servers, are supported by the app. These are accessed separately via the UPnP menu and not editable on the Naim app.
I'm assuming that a play queue and a playlist are different things. A playlist created by the naim app is given a name and saved in the app's memory whereas a play queue may not be until it is saved as a playlist. Perhaps this is the reason that playlists can be extended beyond the 500 limit whereas a play queue may not.
I don't have any inside info on this having only seen the release notes on my iPad App Store today.
Chris,
do you know whether playlists created in the naim app can be edited to exceed the 500 limit or would a playlist file e.g a m3u file for such a playlist have to be created on a computer and then be streamed to the app via UPnP ?
Fixed: Able to add more that 500 tracks to a playlist when adding from another playlist
Doesn't this mean that you used to be able to do this and now you no longer can?

That would make more sense .....think we read too much into this fix
I just downloaded the new version of the Naim app and took a look at the comments posted on the App Store (all versions ordered by most recent). There are clearly a lot of very unhappy users out there... Not names I recognise from the Forum, mainly new customers who love the hardware but hate the app.
I actually quite like the app and apart from the fact that it seems to lose contact with my NDX fairly frequently have few problems with it. I hope that Naim understand just how annoyed with the app some people are and how important it is that the outstanding issues are fixed asap.
The app is great. 90% of the problems seem to be related to poor network setup. If you set it all up properly everything will work.

As I said I like tha app too. You may well be correct about networks. Perhaps Naim dealers are not providing sufficient guidance to their customers or maybe some people think that connecting hifi devices to networks should be really easy and happen automatically - plug n play.
My network is very robust and all other apps and devices appear to work correctly all the time, the only issue I have is the Naim app not being able to see the NDX and the app some times 'hangs'

Thats a bold statement HH. All my gripes have been with bugs and missing features, nothing to do with network. Mostly the same for others as far as I've read
Look at the version history for the Naim app. Its littered with bug fixes, way way more than any previous release. Im sure the same can be said of the firmware too.

I agree, there are the 10% bug issues, but it's better than the remote, and hops seamlessly between 3 devices here. I just read some one star reviews on the French app store, I'd not feel confident most had an actual problem, just rated it on the 'funkiness' of the skin options (still waiting for Naim green here ; )

Playlists created on the Naim app are still limited to 500 tracks. If a 3rd party server allows more than this, the Naim app can now display them in a folder in the UPnP menu (although I can't test this, as my server is a Naim Unitiserve, which also has a 500 track limit.) I guess we all use playlists in different ways, as 500 is more than long enough for me: it would take more than 24 hours to listen to one!
What is the purpose of the playlist functionality? For me, it forgets the location (red icon) of stored tracks again and again. Useless functionality for me.
I'd give the app 4/10. My network functions perfectly and doesn't bug out at all. But the app still can, it is devoid of richness in the user experience, not particularly intuitive, poorly featured and Rovi is hopelessly awful. But it's all relative I guess.
The turning point will come, if it comes, when someone in the press breaks ranks and criticizes the app to the extent that it puts stink on the hardware.
We now run an NDS and two Musos, so the app isn't so awful; that it's held back the hardware for us. But we can both see how it might.
Harry, Rovi aside - its not part of the app itself - how would you rate it against the old nStream app?
I'm still getting the odd crash (iPad Air, latest OS).
i think the app is decent enough, but I'm a fairly simple user (can't see the point of playlists let alone one greater than 500 songs long - I mean does anyone listen to over a day's music on a regular basis?).
Would appreciate it if the app were integrated with the rest of the device (e.g. Shows header info, utilised the built in volume/play controls like, say YouTube). And I would like an end to crashes (and they're nothing to do with duff network).
But it's not bad at all.
