IOS app 4.5 now available
Posted by: quickben on 18 May 2015
Appeared on my updates on the iPhone this afternoon - loaded but have not had chance to check the bug fixes
More or less daily crashes of the app. It's not a huge deal as I am just again clicking ion the app and it's working again, but it's not in line with the quality I expect from Naim.
Harry, Rovi aside - its not part of the app itself - how would you rate it against the old nStream app?
Worse Mike. All nStream needed was a visual revision to put it in the same league as nServe, which looked much crisper and was more intuitive to use. It's difficult to believe that Naim would use this as an opportunity to actually strip out basic functionality. It's also difficult to believe than Naim have not yet been publicly hammered for coming up so short, although perhaps this points to the fact that I am being over critical and too picky.

I think this is my point and why i get so ticked off with it. None of the issues with the app or firmware are the end of the world, it's just that Naim is a premium product and is sold and priced as such and to me it is not acceptable to have these ongoing problems, its been constant for the past year.
There are those on this forum that bang on about brand loyalty, being loyal to Naim. But i look at it the other way round, where is Naim's loyalty to its customers. Sort the app out sort the firmware out, do it once do it right and keep the Naim name at the level all your loyal customers expect.

The Naim App never crashes for me (n-Serve suffered a specific crash bug but the latest version finally fixed it), and I seem able to find and then play the music I want to play. My needs may be different from others . . . as simply browsing / finding and then playing is pretty much all I'm asking of the app. That it does for me, and I'm OK with its 'new look' (vs. the 2013 version of n-Stream). I honestly don't prefer one over the other; they are different, but the 'new look' doesn't impact me negatively, either functionally or emotionally.
I can flip back and forth between my Qute and NDS, play music, skip ahead, etc. etc., and it NEVER crashes or hangs. I must be one of the lucky ones!

I have no issue with the look of the app. It is what it is. On my ipad i leave the app open but the ipad cover closed when i'm using the NDX, and quite often when i reopen the ipad i just get a spinning circle as the app tries to reconnect. Or ill go to select something and the app just crashes off the screen, this happens less often. Neither is a major issue and Its a simple matter of closing and reopening the app to rectify, but it should not happen. No other app does this and ive tried half a dozen different apps with steamers now.

Mine crashes when I come back to the app after I've been using Safari, email, or the iPad's gone into sleep mode. At those points where I then need to access the app (usually in a hurry to pause it or turn the volume down) the thing will spin its wheels, have a bit of a think, shut down and restart.
It's like most things with the app, it's not the end of the world, and like the last lot of Firmware bugs liveable with, whilst making me think (as an ex software person) that it could and should be better than that as it's the very face of Naim streaming.

My 4.5 app doesn't crash after I've been doing other tasks on my iPad 3 (iOS 8.3). The developers of the app should be getting the crash reports via Apple but have you emailed Naim support about your crashes? Try sending details of your environment by tapping Settings->About->Email version info and then also give some details of the sources (e.g. uPnP, iRadio) you are using when the app crashes. Since I updated to 4.1 on the NDX and changed my broadband router from a BT HomeHub 4 to a TP-Link Archer D2 I've not had any app crashes that I can recall. I've been using Minimserver and Asset uPnP servers.
I have the report back thingy switched on so Naim will be getting all the info.
I'm surprised that there has been no "sticky" or official post from Naim in the Featured Topics section for the new iOS release.
The disappearing "now playing" progress bar is still an issue.
The problem arises when using the Rovi feature (particularly if using it to find info on Amazon or link to othe internet sites)
@Gary, As roo says email our support team with your system info and may be able to advise. It is probably not related but I would be interested to know if clearing the UPnP cache improves things for you. Settings > Input settings > UPnP > Clear cache
@sjabbey, RE disappearing progress bar. Do you mean the handle on the progress slider to jump position in the track? If so that may be because some formats do not support jumping to time. Could you email support@naimaudio.com with system info (Settings > About > Email version info) and a screenshot of when the progress bar is missing if that doesn't explain it.
@Bert, Maybe a silly question, do you use n-Serve or the Naim app? Naim app is pretty stable at the moment but there is an occasional crash with n-Serve which started when iOS 8.3 was released by Apple. If you are on the Naim app could you email us a crash report: support@naimaudio.com
To retrieve a crash report go to the iPhone settings app then:
Privacy > Diagnostics & usage > Diagnostic & usage data
Find an entry for "nStream4" that correlates with the time of the last crash and copy and past the contents into an email.

Hi TJ,
No, the whole bottom screen area where the progress bar should be becomes a "no go area" i.e. it just takes on the background colour and if I go back to one of the search views, all the icons cut off at that point. Closing and restarting the app clears the problem. It doesn't happen that often so it may be a while before I can email a screenprint to you.
It's just happened again (missing now playing/progress bar). Email with screenshot sent.
Post the screenshots here if you'd like. Mine seems to be behaving just fine. Which iPhone / iPad model and OS?

TJ: Ths seems to have worked a treat. No crashes since. Cheers!

I've started clearing the cashes more regularly & it does seems to fix the spinning wheel stalling

Just happened again. Screenshot below. You can clearly see the blank "no go" area at the bottom of the screen where the "now playing"/progress bar should be.
Am using an iPad2 (WiFi) running iOS 8.3
Same picture after restarting the naim app. Now showing the "now playing"/progress bar at the bottom.
I should mention that the selected album/track carries on playing when the progress bar disappears but, of course you can't control it via the app.
Ive had this a few times on my iPhone.
Got to say its been over a week since the new app was released and nothing major has been reported that i can see, well done. Lets hope the new firmware, if it ever gets released, will be the same if not better. Fingers crossed.
