Accessing Synology NAS after fimware update to 5.2-5565

Posted by: bicela on 20 May 2015

Thank you Phil, one question: my 'guest' account is disabled, is it normal? Should I enable it?

Ciao, Maurizio

Thanks Phil, I haven't thankfully updated the Synology firmware yet so I'll wait a while just in case other issues crop up.

By the way it was a pleasure bumping into you at the seminar you had in Bologna.

....following the update my album count went from 1,200 to 360!

Interestingly I was able to see some albums from my NAS shares.

It appears to be permissions issues. I revoked and then re-allowed the permissions, exactly as before.

So far ...the NS01 can now 'see' 1,144 albums.

One of the missing albums was breaching the directory/track string length ....working on the others!

Bloody pain.

...............  not so sure this is right for an individual user.

I've updated to 5.2 & nothing has changed,  I can access all my files & folders,  its exactly the same, just like every other Synology update I've done many times.

I am the only named user & administrator & as such I am not a "group" but a "user" & all the editing - read/write etc - similar to that posted by Phil is all done in User.

Hi Mike, are your 'guest' account also disabled as mine? Buonasera, Mau

Posted on: 20 May 2015 by Mike-B

Hi Mau,  yes guest is disabled   also admin is disabled

I have my name set as System Admin

Posted on: 20 May 2015 by bicela

Thank you Mike! Fast and precise, as usual

Hmm I run two Synology NAS - one as a music store for my HDX(SSD) and one as a music share which is accessed by the HDX and NDX

Both are set up to  auto update and have updated to the latest firmware with no issues as far as I can see.

Admin is enabled - guest user is disabled on both.

Mike, when you say the admin account gets disabled after the update how do you login. I only use the admin login.

Graeme,   err .....   I did not say the admin acc gets disabled after update.

The update changed nothing - at least in my system

What I have in my set (from day one) is the admin & guest lines are disabled,  I have set my user name as System Admin & log in thru that

Sorry Mike i obviously miss understood, thanks for the clarification. Had me worried for a min

FYI, released tonight...

Version : 5.2-5565 Update 1

(2015/05/21)

Fixed Issues

  1. Fixed an issue where users could fail to join domain when the domain admin account contains specific characters.
Posted on: 21 May 2015 by Mike-B

Seems this 5.2 update has been a bit of a dog !!!,   the Syno-sphere-www is full of grief & anguish,  most it seems with the video peeps.

As a Media Server (audio) "user", not a group or guest, I did not find anything wrong.

Anyhow the fixes that update "1" contain are ........

Fixed an issue where users could fail to join domain when the domain admin account contains specific characters.

Improved the compatibility with USB devices.

Fixed a security vulnerability to prevent cross-site scripting attacks (XSS).

Upgraded PHP to 5.5.25 to address multiple security vulnerabilities

Improved the compatibility with 3rd party applications DTV

Fixed an issue where SSD Cache Volume Information may not be displayed correctly in Resource Monitor.

Fixed an issue where users with guest accounts would be unable to create new files or folders via SMB protocol.

............  & I suspect that last one is the problem for the group users

Hey guys,

I realise that there's no personal information being stored by the servers in their folders but I wouldn't be using admin logins from the music servers to your NASs ... guest accounts are there for a purpose and if you don't want to use guest accounts then you should create a specific account for the Naim Music Server to connect under (I've done this with a couple of customers who would otherwise go in and manually fiddle) ... you should never log into *ANYTHING* as admin unless you are actually doing administration.

The NAS setup guides that I did all show using guest access...

...and yes, by default guest access is turned off on Synology's and you have to turn it on.

Cheers

Hi Phil, could you link the 'setup guide' for NAS you mentioned, it could be good to read, at lest for me that I would use 'guest' access for Naim streamer. I'm really not an expert, I use all as default, just added a password to admin account so far.

I'm a little confused here ... What advice were you following that has resulted in your app being unable to see your NDX? Nothing relating to guest access on a Synology NAS and its firmware has any bearing on the app being able to do autodiscovery so if your app was able to see your NDX and now cannot then something else must have changed.

Please drop us an email at support@naimaudio.com then we can pick that up with you directly rather than clouding this thread as it must be an unrelated issue.

Cheers

I haven't updated the Synology one with the current 5.2-5565 issue because they should be fixing that problem.

Cheers

I was struck by the irony of the issue and the response

Phil your ipad must be playing up as well, because I clearly must be missing posts from this thread

Getting back to the thread subject  ......

Since DSM 5.2 update-1 my DS214 is not hibernating.

I've done all the usual checks & found nothing.

I've followed the Synology advisory check list.

I've sent Syn a help request.

The Syn Forum has a growing thread all reporting the same problem.

I'm still beavering at it,  meanwhile it seems that it is a confirmed issue

If anyone finds a solution, lets hear about it.

Thanks Mike was wondering why it was not asleep this morning. They seem to break this feature a lot

Synology have replied with instructions to reset everything back to default - that requires backup & other things,   Other forumites have tried it & it's reported as a fix.

I've gone back & told them its not acceptable,  many users are not IT literate & the risk of damage/loss is high.

I might try the reset but don't have the time this weekend, but whilst I'm tempted, my sensible head says wait for Update-2

Mike "Not a F@&£?#g Chance" springs to mind. Think ill wait for a proper fix. Not risking that.
