Accessing Synology NAS after fimware update to 5.2-5565

Thank you Phil, one question: my 'guest' account is disabled, is it normal? Should I enable it?

Ciao, Maurizio

I might try the reset but don't have the time this weekend, but whilst I'm tempted, my sensible head says wait for Update-2

And it just goes to show the importance of proper testing. I'm as impatient as anyone for the latest Naim firmware update but I'm equally keen that it isn't released until the Beta testers are happy.

And as such, a tip of the hat to the Naim Beta testers. Must be a right pain having to reinstall the firmware over and over and run tests.

More confusion - I just got another mail from Symology to say they will get back in 3 to 5 working days. I'm prepared to wait for update 2 .    And thanks Gary, not really a pain when you are enjoying the work.

Someone on the Synology forum indicates they have found a different work around

Hi guys,

I had the same problem with hibernation. I analyzed the problem and located the cause of the issue. The problem must be the last change in SMB protocol. (See changelog)

You have to disable Windows File Service (SMB). With this change hibernation will work again.

As you know, this is a temporary solution!

Thanks,

Ferhat

ive not tried it yet and to be honest i don't know what the implications are, but have a look

RE: disable Windows File Service

Yes it works OK, but not every time. Using the Synology diagnostic sheet, I found it & tried it yesterday., but tonite its not hibernating, I re-enabled WFS & then disabled again & now it appears OK.

Problem is it does what it says on the label,  with Windows Files Service disabled, you cannot access share files with Windows.

Its not a problem for music until you want to edit music share files in Windows, which I do sometimes.

I'm leaving WFS disabled but keeping a check on its running state & that's me done, no more time wasting on this – I will wait for update-2

Cheers Mike. I will do the same. See how it behaves. Hopefully won't take long to get sorted

Posted on: 25 May 2015 by Foxman50

I was watching Kate Bush @ BBC & that finished at 00:00.  It lives in a cabinet along with the UPS thats in the listening room &  I have the cabinet door open to keep an eye on behavior.

Its still zzzzzz'ing this morning

Just had an e-mail from Synology advising to try to disable WFS & see if it allows hibernation to work correctly.  If it does,  then its a known issue & they are working on it & expect a solution "very soon"

I confirmed I've had it disabled since yesterday & yes it does allow hibernation.

Synology Verson 5.2-5565 update 2 has been released that is supposed to fix the hibernation issue.

Hopefully nothing else gets broken. Now that is how to provide support, 2 weeks for new firmware to fix a problem

Hi Foxman, any news on upgrade 2 ???

I've been counting puffins on an island off SW Ireland, millions of miles from nearest Naim & Synology.  Now back in www-land,  but getting withdrawal pangs as I will not be back home until late Tuesday next

Hi Mike

What a lovely part of the country, and one i've still to do myself. Its on the list. I have not installed the patch yet, i'm reading up on the Synology forum first to see if any issues. Usual crashes and hangs but all seems good so far. May attempt it tonight, will keep you posted.

Upgraded yesterday with no issues. Can't tell if hibernation was fixed as I was hibernating myself at the time!

Glad it worked well for you Gary. My box is now no longer giving me access via the web GUI or via SSH!

If you read over on the Synology forum, some are having to do a manual reboot. Seems maybe the auto reboot isnt completing correctly.

Hi Foxman,

Thanks for the suggestion - tried it.

I can access my shares and so I am patiently waiting to see if some magic solution arrives, if not I will have to do a reset.

Hi Foxman,

Well .....patience paid off ....I think!

I had an issue with a non-NAS 3TB drive (as you know).

I replaced this with a similar 3TB, as I had one to hand.

I then did a quick SMART check on all the HDDs. One of the other 3TBs had issues. I replaced this with a 4TB WD Red.

The 4TB took 12 hours to parity check, and another 12 hours to rebuild.

The volume then reported itself as down and there were issues with the boot partition(s). But provided a link for repair, which succeeded in about 4 seconds.

The NAS reported that there were issues with the directory structure and suggested a reboot and check, which I did.

Following this all seemed to be functioning well .....until 30 minutes later when I couldn't gain access via the web GUI or SSH.

I could still gain access to the shares and so left things running overnight whilst I did some digging. The issues remained and so I used the power button to do a reboot; which completed, but I still had no access.

24 hours later and my access has been restored; now digging through the logs!

Hmm think i may just pass on this update

Jeez Mr U, not sure what i would have done to be honest. I have one spare HDD i keep just in case. Seems like you've been to hell and back.

Hi Graeme,

I am glad I do not have to rebuild the Volume!

Like you I keep a spare HDD, which I will now load up as a hot spare.

Has the update to  Version:5.2-5565 Update 2 released yesterday improved the issues you may be having?

Posted on: 11 June 2015 by Mr Underhill

Hi Glyn,

Assuming this was a question for me ...update installed, no problems.

I have NO issues with the Synology hardware. It has performed well and recovered. I do find the support a bit less than stellar, and feel things could be better documented.

In the case of the GUI and SSH shutdown I am ASSUMING it is related to the directory structure recovery ....but there is nothing in the logs. I will be looking at changing the log verbosity when I get a few minutes.

I loaded 5.2 5565 update-2 with no problems,  I tried to find some of the "problems" reported on Synology & this forum,  & for me its all is 100% OK

Hibernation works on queue,  I re-enabled Windows File System (the hibernation workaround)  & I can see the NAS, Music share & manipulate/edit albums OK in Windows Explorer,  so for me its job done.

Good to hear Mike. I think i will update mine when i have enough time to fix it should it all go pear.

Posted on: 17 June 2015 by Phil Harris

Had a dealer setting up a server with a Synology 214 and still hitting this issue with the 5.2-5565 firmware this morning.

By default the Synology installs 5.2-5565 when it does its initial firmware download during setup and on the downloads page there is only 5.2-5565 too. It's only when you do a firmware update within the setup of the NAS that you get to install rev2.

I was able to do a factory reset on the NAS, let it install 5.2-5565 *THEN* immediately update to 5.2-5565rev2 and then I was able to set up shares correctly after that.

Cheers

Phil
