Time Capsule

Posted by: Milija on 30 May 2015

Hello,

I would like to buy and connect Apple Time Capsule 2TB on my network.

Is it possible to use TC like NAS drive and stream music from Naim ND5XS?

Backup from my computers file is not important, idea is to use TC only to storage music files.

Hi Milija,

You can use TC as a genereal purpose network share. You need to enable it under the Apple Airport utility.

You will need a seperate UPnP Media server (Minimserver, Asset, Twonky etc) running on a computer elsewhere however.

The machine that is running your UPnP media server will need to mount the TC data share (as per the label you gave it in the Airport utility) over your LAN. The TC network share should appear as a SMB or AFP network share. Best use AFP as there are reports of Apple's implementation of SMB being slightly problematic.

You will need the access credentials you setup in the Airport utility.

However despite all this, I would not recommend it.. and I understand Apple don't recommend the TC as a genereal purpose NAS either. The reason? The TC is designed for background incremental backups, and the occasional restore. It's performance is probably too low to comfortably use it for general purpose NAS duties. You may find it becomes a throughput bottleneck.

I would recommend using a purpose designed NAS for network storage if this is what you want to do.. Further many of these consumer NAS's now have an OS and enough CPU power and memory to support a third party UPnP media server directly without needing another computer.

I use my TC as a backup store, dual band / 802.11ac wifi access point and internet router. It does all three very well, and the TC restore capability has saved a lot of grief a couple of times. I have set it up to also support a share, but only occasionally use it as such if I need some sort of local drop box facility, where for what ever reason my main NAS's are not appropriate.

I would not buy a TimeCapsule for that purpose.  Usually people ask these questions if they already own one and want it to do double duty.  Why do you want to buy this product for this purpose? It's really not its intended purpose or close to it, so I was wondering what gave you the idea.

It does a really nice job running Time Machine and backing up a Mac.  My Macbook needed service (new trackpad) and came back from Apple with a fresh OS install.  But all of my data was on my TC and it restored to just where I'd left it.

Thank you.
I will definitely buy classic NAS
Could you suggest me what will be good. 2TB in mirror (2 x 1TB) will be ok.
My budget is limited.

I use a Netgear NAS, but quite a few on this forum use a Synology NAS.. a hint . If you think you might know what media server you want to use(Minimserver, Asset etc) , go to its website and check it can run on your NAS... Always got to think ahead with this stuff
