Nas folder hierarchy

Posted by: CSI_Basel on 04 June 2015

Hi

i'm new to having a Nas and I have a variety of music that I want to put onto the Nas.

I would like to have a folder for hires music, one for my downloads and also a 3rd that would have my girlfriends music.

Is it possible to have this and then in nStream you would first see these 3 folders and then look into each folder for the music.

What do you to keep your music ordered on the Nas?

If your uPnP server will display a folder view (I'm sure most it not all will) then you can divide your collection accordingly and ask for it to be displayed in this format.. Providing all music is accurately tagged and the server knows where it is, you can filter what you view by a wide array of tags.

I just put everything in one music folder with artist sub folders and album sub folders therein. The tags take care of everything else. In addition you can set up playlists. There's all sorts of ways of doing it and the original files don't necessarily need to be organised into a particular structure to suit the view. Conversely, if you find it convenient to do this, it doesn't limit how multiple folders will be displayed - unless you want it to.

That's the beauty of streaming. Get a good, stable uPnP server and then please yourself.

Hi Basel,

Further to what Harry said, the way I organize the music on my nas has nothing really to do with the way it shows up in the Naim App, as I use Artist, Album and Genre views in the app primarily.

That's the power of metadata tags -- regardless of how you put music in folders, you can sort by tags.

That said, I organize my folders by artist.  I used to have a separate set of folders for hi res music as a legacy from when I first started downloading it, but later realized I should just throw it in by artist.
