Hendrix box sets
Posted by: MDS on 07 June 2015
I'm looking to expand my Hendrix CD collection and have come across this box set which purports to have material not released on his main-stream albums.
Anyone know if it's any good music wise and in terms of reproduction quality?
Thanks
Sorry, haven't heard that particular set. Seems like the Hendrix estate might be second only to The Beatles in reissuing, remastering, recompiling, and reformatting the same material under new titles. In general though, the recent Hendrix remasters I have on CD have very good sound quality, probably limited more by the quality of the source tapes than the mastering. One recent release I'd highly recommend is "People, Hell and Angels".
Thanks, joerand. Haven't come across People, Hell and Angels before. A quick look on Am***n shows quite a few different versions.

I have this on vinyl, but I'm pretty sure it's still available on CD as well. Covers his early career as well as his later work. Sound quality is pretty good.

I bought this set on vinyl when it first came out back in the 1990s (2000 actually) The sound quality and the music is fine.
I have that box-set in vinyl, it's my favourite Hendrix vinyl plays!
Out-takes, live and rare versions, fabulous, highly recommended!

Mike,
I bought the vinyl of "People, Hell and Angels" so can't help with a CD on that. I have a half dozen or so remastered Hendrix CDs and find the SQ consistently good, albeit the bottom end might be a bit boosted from originals, they play well to my ears. Two particularly enjoyable CDs for me were "BBC Sessions" (1998, mine a reissue from 2010) and "Are You Experienced" (1997). Both were remastered by Eddie Kramer and George Marino at Sterling Sound. Marino and Sterling are "go tos" for SQ when I buy CDs or vinyl.
Yep, another vote for the "purple" box set. I have it on vinyl, the music is great, SQ is fine. Haven't heard it in quite a while - must dig it out!

Thanks, Kevin. Think I'll order one.

And another vote from me for the purple box set on vinyl.

So the box set arrived a couple of days ago and I've unwrapped it this evening. Very-well presented with a rich booklet explaining the recordings etc that I'm going to work my way through. Disc1 being played now and I'm already intrigued by the different recordings of songs so familiar to me, e.g. the different ending to Purple Haze. I like the rawness of some of the recordings too which somehow feel to have a bit more intimacy. Only problem I foresee if the box set isn't going to fit in my CD rack. Still I think I'm going to enjoy dipping in and out of this box set and gaining an understanding of Jimi's work and band(s) at a deeper level. Nice one
