Changing network cables...

setup is NDS, UnitierveSSD, Ready NAS, Draytek router, Netgear switch.
just a quick noddy question -- do i need to switch off the NDS and or US before i change network cables NAS to switch, US to switch and NDS to switch? i didnt think so, but just thought i would souble check...

I never switch anything off and I'm sure it's OK to do it like this.
I don't know the mechanism, but there will be something there that safeguards equipment, if they are at risk at all with these low voltages.
In corporate settings it would be undoable to switch off components just to change a network cable.
These devices are hot pluggable. They will detect when they are connected and the two ends will synchronise with each other at the physical level and bring up the link..this then allows the higher functions to recognise there is a new link and should initiate DHCP etc.
From an electrical point of view the connections are galvanically isolated so as to remove any common mode DC offset on the twisted pairs.
In professional settings it is usual practice to disable the connections on the switch when not in use or when being setup, and once physically connected then re-enable the port.. But on consumer the stuff what the switch does is a lot simpler and on an unmanaged device this is simply not possible anyway.

I've removed or swapped ethernet cables a few times & have never switched off the NAS or player ends, but I do switch off the Netgear GS105 switch - its an unmanaged item that learns/remembers its connections. When the cables are reconnected & with the NDX, NAS & wireless router on & live, I turn on the switch & it re-establishes its connections.
I do the same after I've had the system powered down, I power up NDX, NAS & wireless & once the NAS has fully restarted, then switch on the GS105.
Its probably overkill & all a bit unnecessary, but its a process that makes sense to me.
Mike it makes no difference really, but if you feel happier then that is what it is all about.
I would say however the Naim DHCP algorithm has seemed happier in the past if the Naim is powered up after router (with DHCP server) and switch.. Although more recent firmware has improved here.
PS posted on your wall, a correction on TT.. Very much approved in the UK as long as fitted with RCD and actually required where a low voltage PME connection would actually be illegal (static and mobile caravans fed off domestic supply as well as house bouts). I have posted link to regs. Legislation of 2012 amendments on gov.uk

Hi Simon, I find when the Naim is powered up with no switch it just shows "No Network" & "Press List to Retry" & sticks on that.
Once NAS is up & the switch is powered, pressing Naim "OK List" button gets the network straight away - that said a friend who insists on wireless to his SU has to retry 5 to 10 times before he gets a connection, self inflicted pain IMO .
I've posted a TT reply on your Wall

Ken,
When I was playing around with the Melco device a couple of weeks' back we were moving Ethernet cables around in this way. We unplugged the cable from the NDS then unplugged cable from the switch and plugged it into NDS. No problems at all.
We did need to restart the iPad app when making this change so that it picked up the different set up.
many thanks guys for your advice on this issue. not sure i understand all the technical issues, but the important thing is that this doesnt seem to be a critical issue anyhow.
