Backing up HDX with Synology NAS

Posted by: Jason on 17 June 2015

I have taken the good advice given by those here and plumped for a Synology NAS drive to back up my files from the HDX.

I have the NAS up and running, I have some music on it and I can access and play music on the HDX from shares on the NAS.

I have today (from 10am until now!!) been trying to set up the HDX backup facility to the NAS.

I have followed the HDX manual, consulted the knowledge base and searched high and low on the forum here, but I can't find an answer to this problem.

I have set up (now numerous times) a new share on the NAS, with absolutely nothing in it and then used the DTC and the front screen of the HDX to try and promote that share to a Backup destination.....but it's not having it!!

Everytime I have followed the instructions through and the select the empty share to "add backup" or "use as backup", it searches and tells me that I cannot use this share as it has files or folders in it....but it most certainly has not got anything in it!!

It doesn't seem to matter what I do, the results are the same.

On the knowledge base it talks about setting up a remote, time-stamped back-up where I need to enter a host (HDX name / IP address) and path ("music") but I cannot find a back up facility within the Synology diskstation browser that supports these details?  It appears all the backups are to do with either the NAS itself or I can use a cloud thing to back up my computer, but not, it would seem, a third party device?

Any help from someone who has a Synology NAS and has set this up would be greatly appreciated!

Have you changed the workgroup name of the nas to "naim"  (no " marks)

Check the settings on the nas for the workgroup; by default it might be blank, or say "home."  You need it to say naim.

Try that!

Ok Bart, thank you.  I'll have a look and try that.

Ok, I've set up a group entitled "naim", without the quotes.  I've allowed the group access permissions to the shared file "HDX Backup" which is where I am trying to backup to on the NAS.

I've then attempted again to use the shared file as a backup but the same result.

I go to the DTC, rescan the shared file and then select 'use as backup' but it does the same thing. I get a warning saying the share must be completely empty, and asks me if I want to use it as a backup. I select YES, it then tries to do something, then DTC stops responding, then reconnects, then eventually tells me the shared file contains files or folders so it can't be used as a backup!

Any ideas?

If you run out of options, give Naim tech support a call, they are usually very good at sorting this sort of  issue. Unless, of course, you like a challenge!

Chris/Bart,

Success at last!

Finally, I found another guide on the knowledge base on setting up a Synology Ds212j, which is similar to mine and having followed this, it all works!

The problem seemed to be related to the fact that the Naim setup required you to allow guest read and write access, rather than leaving the guest as a read permission only.

If only that was in the manual!!

Nevermind, got there in the end, 11 hours later!!

Thanks Guys.

Hello, I am yet another HDX user who is trying to set up a new Synology NAS for music backup.  I have an enabled "HDXBackup" network share that shows up with a green light under "Network Shares" on the HDX screen.  However, when I go to "Music Stores" and then "Add New Music Backup," there is an error message "no shares currently online."  Huh?  I have create a group "naim", on the NAS, added "guest" (and myself) to that group, with read/write permissions for "HDXBackup."  I also consulted the note from Phil Harris, and followed his advice on permissions for "guest."

Any suggestions?

I may have figured this out.  It appears that a "network share" cannot be used as a backup.  In the Mac N-Serve app, I converted my backup folder to a "network store," and then could designate it as a backup.  TBH, I see no mention of this distinction in the HDX documentation, and I was unable to make this change through the HDX interface. My first backup is scheduled, hope it works.

I believe backups were a much later feature (1.4d beta / 1.5) IIRC

Actually, I do see a statement to the effect that only "network stores"  can be used for backup in the most recent HDX manual, but there is no clear way to create a network store in the HDX interface.  The only option provided for an existing network share, enabled online, is "new music store."  Maybe after that, the new music store could be converted to backup function?  Anyway, I'm not gonna mess with it now; the N-Serve is much clearer.

I remember it was quite simple to set this up with a Synology, I had mine working in less than 30min.

1. Create a folder on the NAS i.e. "NaimMusic"

2. Create a user on the NAS i.e. "naim" with password "naim" and allow this user read/write for the above folder

3. Go into the HDX browser menu, add user name and the password for the folder, it will be visible already

4. Then you can go an use this folder to create a new backup

Have you looked at the setup guides on our knowledgebase?

http://www.netserverapps.com/n...7&category_id=15

There should be no need to set up usernames and passwords as there is no personal data stored in the folders.

Cheers

Chris, I was unable to do what you describe when using the HDX browser interface.  The shared folder created on the Synology was easy enough to add to "network shares," with password and so on, but the folder did not appear as a choice when I pressed the "add new backup" button.  It would appear, however, when I pressed "add new music store," but that of course is a different beast.

Perhaps it was a mistake to make my backup folder a "network share," but without that step, the folder wouldn't show up at all.

AHT,  go to Naim website >> customer support >> Knowledge Base.

Then look under Hard disk players, servers and there is a paper for Synology.  The paper relates to a Synology DS212J I believe, but mine is a slightly different and later model, so the menus are a little different.  If you set up exactly as shown here, it should just work, as mine did.  I spent ages like you, trying different things and following what the HDX manual said.  If you want it to work with Synology, forget the HDX manual and just follow this paper in the knowledge base.....it worked first time for me!

Edit:  The link Phil posted above takes you straight to the Synology setup paper I refer to above, sorry saw this after I posted!

Jason, I have looked at that guide, although admittedly after I did my initial Synology setup.  Functionally, what I did amounted to what is described there, in my opinion.  Note, however, that the document only covers setting up the folders (shares), and doesn't describe the final setup of the HDX backup routine.  That was the snag I encountered.  The final advice in the document is "use N-Serve, DTC, or the browser HDX interface."

In any case, I achieved my goal through using the N-Serve app, so there's no point in starting over.  N-Serve is just more logical, flexible, and responsive than the HDX interface, again in my opinion.

Ah, ok.  At least its sorted.I misinterpreted the issue then! The problem I had was getting the HDX to accept a share as a backup location. Reading your post quickly, I thought that was the problem you had too!
