Wow! This place seems dead at times ....
Posted by: joerand on 17 June 2015
The forum ain't the hub of activity it was just years ago.
Maybe everyone is simply happy with their systems? Great if that's the case!
Or maybe I need to get a life?
Probably
Joerand, I know what you mean... Hifi comment, discussion and even heated debate appears to have declined over very recent months.. And some of the prominent participants of recent years appear no longer to participate. Sad thing is that according to Mrs SinS this forum has been part of my life..

Thanks Simon. Maybe I could insult you about your bald head?
Looking at recent threads that have 'done well', they seem to be about Statement and Lumina leads that are beyond the reach of the majority here, so involve fewer people. The introduction of streaming generated a lot of activity, both around options and problem solving but now many have switched that dies off. People now have less to spend and are generally more careful, and as a consequence there seem to be fewer upgrading threads.
When I first joined the Forum there were a number of knowledgeable and active regulars, many of whom are less active or have simply stopped posting.
From a personal perspective, since buying my current system and having much less cash, upgrading is simply not on my radar. It's good to be able to advise others on occasion, but without recent experience of many products, that advice becomes more tenuous.
I'm sure these things are cyclical, but while the Forum is a bit dull it becomes less likely that more passionate and witty people will be attracted, which is a shame.
Maybe calling Simon 'baldy' will have to suffice for a while.
Here's a joke for you- a skeleton walks up to the bar and asks for a pint of beer and a mop.....
It does seem a little quiet at the moment, having experienced the ebbs and flows on here over the last 5 years or so.
Its usually my first and last stop of the day checking in to the Forum (saddo...!).
With the occasional exceptional thread like Statement has landed or SL-the full loom I guess there isnt that many new announcements or events to get stuck into.
And there is the regular reappearance of the perennial Naim streaming direction thread that gets people heated up for a few weeks
But other than that, there is very little news on the Naim website these days, similarly the wider hi-fi industry.
Maybe all the new stuff is being saved for a post Summer blitz!
I have only been reading (and occasionally posting) on the forum for about a couple of years so don't have the historical perspective, but I would anticipate a lively new thread on the amplifier upgrades once the prices and timescales are announced, probably focusing on the 250. I have to say that I have found the forum invaluable as I have negotiated the Naim world for the first time.
Clive
Agreed, its very quiet, exceptions have been Statement & SL cables.
Agree with Chris, very little real new news, but disagree over the perennial streaming thread(s), I wish it was perennial but it seems to never ending & it streams yet another clone of the last thread every other day & its all terminally boring - IMHO (of course)
Many items seem to be repeats over the same ol' ground & it would be even quieter if peeps used the search facility.
Maybe its an indicator that with no really new technology over the last years, all the good advice from the forumites has help solve the issues.
Maybe we can fix this with another cable debate, direction, all sound the same ??? ...... second thoughts = NO this place is far too civilised & best leave that to the fish pond
I mainly miss the discussions and reviews of music. I always have appreciated the threads in which people discuss about their appreciation for certain albums, comparisons between different artist etc. This also has calmed down and is the most sorrow part. I still expect in the next months quite some activity around the new DR amps and comparisons with non DR versions up etc.... But indeed when I joint it was more juicy.......
Your description matches my sentiment too.
However without firm news of roll out dates to placate 'the disappointed ones', I'm sorry to say that I think that thread is going to continue to resurrect itself with flurries of activity from time to time.
I'd better get back to work

I agree. The 'What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested?' thread might usefully be abbreviated to 'What are you listening to?' as it's often little more than a list. Likewise, in 'Listening chain challenge' people usually can't be bothered to explain the link, as suggested in Graeme's opening post. Maybe we're getting lazy, as it's so easy just to copy and paste an album cover.
I used to enjoy the Music Room more, and I don't find the 'lists' useful at all. I am not looking there anywhere near as much, and almost never look at Hi Fi corner (but have not for years)
I like to have a bit of a review of an album or artist rather than just a list-if nothing else it encourages me to investigate further if I have some idea of the genre or similar items. I think people should be braver posting about particular albums that they are really enjoying and explain why etc.
However the Forum is what we make of it, and is a function of what we contribute. If I have started some threads I have had some interesting replies; the Forum is still potentially a source of considerable interest and expertise. Maybe we should all try more.
No Joe, it has not changed since you last asked a year ago.

or me, the year before that.

It seems to have happened on other fora as well.
Things change, people move on. There are only you, I and a few other sad "barstewards" hanging on here. Yeah , we need to get a life.
I think a number of reasons are at play that have already been touched on above. Posts about Statement level gear are perhaps interesting to read, but since I couldn't spend that much on a house let alone an audio system it is not a place where i can contribute in any meaningful way. I think people generally have less to spend, and a lack of new product in the attainable level of gear has also not been conducive to more discussion.
And as HH said, I am likewise in a spot where I am not about to upgrade any time soon, and the gear I have is not the latest iteration so I may not have much to contribute advice-wise when people ask about newer Naim products.
I still enjoy the system pics thread and the what have you been listening to threads, and certain members who post about classical music I try to read as an education tool for myself.
And Simon, not only is your head bald, but those eyebrows are a joke! (There, now we can have some spirited debate over the presence and absence of hair follicles on SImon's head.)
Many items seem to be repeats over the same ol' ground & it would be even quieter if peeps used the search facility.
And if the forum wasn't set to archive and lock threads after a few months. Instead of a few long threads, periodically revived to be updated, a discussion goes silent, gets locked and has to be restarted from scratch. I would like to periodically post more but I can't be arsed to keep repeating myself.
It was a very lively place when I first joined in 2001. Real men and keyboard heroes ruled and destroyed lesser men. It was also cliquey, unfriendly and new members introducing themselves and asking questions were frequently derided and ridiculed I much prefer it now. Much of the arrogant bitchiness seems to have gone to somewhere else, and long may it stay there.
"It was also cliquey, unfriendly and new members introducing themselves and asking questions were frequently derided and ridiculed"
That was my experience when I first got into Naim and joined (late '90's) - bad enough that I was like "Well bump this" and didn't even look for quite a while.
Just add the Hugo to your post and you can really get something going...

Now to set the cat among the pigeons. This might help some of use poorer members.
I have not heard the Statement or Luminas but was convinced that the 500 is not giving it's best - sooo after reading about the Lumina Din/XLR leads and speaker cables, I looked into alternative manufacturers. I rejected Chord as it is almost as expensive as Lumina so at the moment I am trying the Din/XLR and speaker leads from a much more economical source. They have had 100 hours of burn in and the results of changing from the stock cables and NACA 5 are (to my ears, in my system, in my room) beyond expectations. With a 5m pair of speaker cable and 2 Din/XLRs for under £400 including a 30 day return and refund arrangement, there is an economical alternative IMHO!!!!
Now I am ready for a flaming!!

Pray tell.

TP ?
It's not easy when I spent two weeks thinking up an interesting thread - only to have no replies.
Ah - got you
I wish I understood. Are we back to the old days of only communicating with winks and in crowd hints or might Frank possibly be persuaded to just come out and say it in English? Are we only allowed to say "Chord" in here?
Mana from heaven. Perhaps.
Thank you Frank. And most interesting because they are one of the candidates for my DIN-XLR cables. Since I can't try before I buy (although I can send them back) your views are very useful and appreciated.

Agreed. Those nasty types, they now swim with the fishes.
