Where Do We Find DSD Recordings

Posted by: Mike-B on 25 June 2015

I ask the question as hopefully it won't be long before the DSD upgrade will be available for most network players

However I recieved an e-mail this morning from HighResAudio.jp advising they are stopping their high res audio www sales as of 1st July

"............. regret we had to decide to stop our high resolution download service on July 1st...............Since a number of  native dsd albums by Octavia Records are only available through us, from now until July first will be your last chance to order ..........."

Its a shame as they had some nice PCM material as well.

Back to the post title, where do we get DSD ?

I have bought from the now defunct japanese co. above,  & also the same named HighResAudio in Germany

Outside that I am only aware of USA outlets & they all have those very annoying regional restrictions.

I propose us forumites list the outlets that carry DSD materials that we know of,  please include an indication of location (Europe, USA) so we all will know if regional restrictions apply.

- moderators please be kind,  this is info,  not commercial.

Finally - what plans for Naim to carry DSD ?

Thanks Mike,

This is bad news. I haven't had the email, although I have used HighResAudio quite a few times. They are often cheaper than Qobuz and have the stuff HDTracks won't sell in Europe (eg Rush 40th Aniversary). I may spend a few quid this weekend!

Hi Keith, I apologize as re-reading my post I see I did not make it clear ...

... this is HRA Japan,  not the same named German outlet & I'm pretty certain they are not related.

That's a relief.

How many native DSD downloads are actually out there? I bought a DSD album from Acoustic Sounds and it sounded wonderful. I subsequently saw that it was also available elsewhere in various PCM formats at 24/96. So it's difficult to know what is what. If we confine ourselves to vendors who claim true DSD from start to finish, the choice becomes obscure and tiny.

I suppose that at some point someone will make SACD material available? But wait - won't that defeat one of the huge advantages of SACD? The driving force behind its development. The ability to prevent copying.

I have a couple of DSD albums from Blue Coast Records - excellent quality acoustic pieces.... Expensive though at $50 an album.

This lists 1379 dsd albums on various webshops: http://www.findhdmusic.com/alb...ch/?q=&fmt_dsd=1

Webshop specialised in dsd: https://www.nativedsd.com/

I've downloaded from nativedsd.com and the process was straightforward. I've also used Blue Coast Music, although only for a 'sampler' free download. Both of these sites claim to sell worldwide without geographical restrictions.

TOP TIP Aleg,  "findhdmusic.com"  has a super search facility that sorts by www vendor into artsist/album/label/genre & by all the PCM formats & DSD & 5.1 etc.  I have it rooted on my google banner from now

We live in hope that it will improve - I would always go for genuine DSD rather than PCM if there is an option. However, you may want read about the Berkley Audio Design reference DAC for some different views on DSD and Linn shares the same views. I think it is great that Naim is not adopting this approach and offering DSD on its digital music players and allowing its customers to choose their preferred format.

Ideally we need to go back thru the chain to the original recording in DSD,  I have a few of these & it does stand out as something better/different to those mastered from something else into DSD.

As for Linn & DSD, its strange & I suspect its more to do with marketing & attempting to influence the customer base.

Interesting, and shows just how little there is available too buy, at least in the more mainstream genres.  Apart from the Carpenters there wasn't much listed I would have gone out of my way to get

Unfortunately that's the downside of DSD ATM. If the format isn't better supported soon it may just disappear. It's not even that easy to rip SACDs.

It is not supposed to be. As big a reason as anything to do with sound quality for the development of the SACD format was to make it impossible to copy.

I use NativeDSD. They tend to use DSD recording sessions and masters.

I have chosen a few great LSO recordings natively undertaken in DSD.. It really seems to make a difference.

Depending on your preferred genre, +1 for Native DSD.  Also www.2l.no, they offer DSD versions of their DXD PCM recordings, so if your wallet and system permit might be better to go for the DXD options, also  have a generous selection of demo tracks in the various formats on their site.
