Advice on road trip to southern Italy

Posted by: Chillkram on 09 April 2011

I'm thinking of driving to the Amalfi Coast rather than flying owing to cost considerations mostly. I drove last year to Rome and, although the driving was fine the traffic from Milan northwards and on through Switzerland and was horrible, especially the queue for the St Gotthard pass/tunnel.

I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for a better route. All of the route planners recommend the way I went last year (France/St Gotthard/Switzerland/Milan etc)

Has anyone got any experience of driving via Mont Blanc?

We are travelling in mid August and coming back end of August.

Thanks

Mark,

Stick with the Gortthard route, it's by far the quickest most straightforward route there is.... you were just unlucky, sometimes it can get snarled up with an accident but is not usual. I do this journey 3-4 times a year down to southern Italy, in fact i'm off at beginning of May.

Good luck.

Cheers Gary. I must admit it does look increasingly like it is the best route, I just wondered if other routes had less traffic.

As a matter of interest, how long does it take you to do the journey and where do you stop?

I generally stop just after you enter Italy in a large services, can't remember the name but it's about half way between the border crossing and Milan. I have a camper van so it's easy to stop there after doing usually around 15 hours of driving. I have done Venice or Florence to Calais non stop quite a few times but i'm bolloxed after doing so.
