UnitiServer SSD can't replay my downloads from Naim Store

Posted by: kiba on 13 April 2011

I would like to  download a Hig res CD from Naim store to my unitiserver SSD (NAS), how should I download it,  directly to the MQ folder on the NAS or ???

You cannot directly put stuff in the serve.

If you have a nas stick it on there and the serve should automagically pick it up.

You must put it on a network share on your NAS and not the Naim Music Store.

At my NAS I have 3 folders called LQ, HQ MQ, all my ripped CD is by the UN stored in the folder MQ. I need to define a new folder on the NAS ex Downloaded-music and copy the downloaded files (music and frame-art) to this folder. As it is already know to the UN-SSD, the UN can find it automatically - or do I have to set it up ex. using the DTC in some way ??

You need to set up a new share/folder  on the NAS using your PC, and download to this location (known as a network share) . Do not copy to the Naim designated Music Store(s). The Unitiserve will automatically locate and display the download file(s) provided that, you have music identified in the folder name. For the web browser you may need to check "all music" under the music location window if this is not already set.

thx, I will try this

Copied to my NAS : First made a folder called "Music", didn't work, can't see it using APP N-server, DTC or the web-browser. Then moved directly under the share name, at the root, same result. So What to do ??

I am assuming that you can still see the Naim music store.

Firstly via your web browser, go to >system set up>network shares>manage shares. Is the  new network share you created visible?. If so is it enabled?

If so go back one step to network shares and click "Refresh all shares". It can take some time to show up.

Also go into browse music >music location and ensure that "All music" is ticked.

I define a new folder on the NAS called Music-downloads.

And No I can't see this folder when using the refesh shares function.

Background:

When enabling the NAS on my PC I defined a new drive Z: to map the IP adress of the NAS, so I can view folders and data on the PC.

When asigning the NAS to the UNitiserver, the NAS name didn't show up when refreshing shares, so I need to use the Add New share funtion, in order to enable the NAS drive, again by typing in the IP adress. This works when ripping and replaying using UN - no problems.

I have tried to add a new share to the UN, by adressing the NAS as before including the new folder name, no succes the UN can accept this as a share.

YOu need to log onto your nas via a web browser. From here you can create new share folders. Create a new one called music. Put the music in here. Probably no real need to set secruity on this folder so the serve can pick it up straight away.

I think you are simply creating folders within a share. No this should work to be fair but might depend on if the share is available to everyone or not.

Made the folder Music loged on to the NAS, and copied the download, but still it doesn't work, sorry

this is how my NAS file system looks like

Posted on: 15 April 2011 by kiba

My best hint right now is, that what I see when trying to replay the download, is some how connected to the fact, that I was not able to see my NAS in "My Networks"after installing the NAS, but need to map the NAS to a drive (here Z, before i could "use" it at the PC. When mapping I need to use the IP adress for the NAS. The same when UN was connect to the NAS: UN was not able to see the NAS when doing a "Refresh shares" + "Mange my share",  but I need to "Add share" manually (again using the IP adress, which were translated by UN to the correct name //Diskstation.home/music-1). So rip/replay works but ... :-) I can't replay downloaded CD's (My wife smiles)

Is your NAS and the UnitiServe in the same Windows Workgroup?

I believe on the uniti devices the default workgroup is set to NAIM, so your NAS should than also have its workgroup set to NAIM.

For a device to appear in "My Networks" on your PC the device needs to be in the same workgroup, so if possible I think it best to set all devices to the same workgroup.

Hi Kiba,

I am also unable to see my NAS within "My Networks" on the PC and have to manually map it. This did not stop my Userve finding the drive.

Now you added the NAS manually to the Userve, go into "Manage Shares" to confirm that the NAS is listed and also that it  is enabled.

Kiba you have not done it right, further more you risk screwing up your music store.

1. Ignore the music store, this is used exclusively by the Serve, not by you.

2. Create a new SHARE on the NAS, not on the music store, by the looks of things you currently only have one, which is the music store, all you have done is created a FOLDER in the music store. Bad move. In your nas settings there should be the ability to add a new SHARE. Call this 'my music'

3 Put the music you download in there.

Sorry but I do not have the specific nas you do. For your own peace of mind unmap that share from your PC, you should not be in there, Once you have created you rnew share map that one and dump music in it.

Progres :-) It was the Workgroup problem. So now it's all NAIM, and it's working as far as the NAS is now visible in the DTC. I made a new share (this time) called it My-music and copied the downloaded music to it. Using the DTC "Music repository/Scanable Network share/, both share are online and active. In "Music rep"/"Music stores" I now only have the UN ripped CD's (HQ, LQ, MQ).

So far so good. BUT when using the DTC or the n-server APP I would have expected to see the downloaded music !! but sadly non shows - so what to do ??

Have you given access rights to the newly created directory My-music?

What rights are now given on the new directory My-music?

For testing purposes it is easiest to give it "Guest" access with full rights.

You know I keep being told that I should buy a UnitiServe but I notice that a lot of people have file management issues, problems with cover art and difficulties with the desktop client which must use windows. I never have an issue with Vortexbox and I don't need Windows to administer it. It is simple just like me. Tog

Same here but with my Unitiserve! Have now ripped over 2500 CD's with no issue at all.

Hi Kiba...I am having the same problems (See my post). I only got my Unitiserve SSD a couple of days ago. Originally, the US couldn't find the Qnap NAS. Had to factory restore the NAS, then it worked perfectly. However, trying to access files on my iMac is anther story. I copied Hi-Res files to MQ folder, but like yours, the US can't see it. I'll try what you did!

Hi Garyi

I have done exactly as you said. Created a new share on my Qnap NAS called 'Hi Res Music', which the Unitiserve SSD found IMMEDIATELY. However, when I attempted to copy a file to the new share (Hi Res Music) in my iMac, I was presented with three folders. HQ, LQ and MQ. I did not know where to paste the file? I am using an iPad (n-serve) to control play back of the Unitiserve SSD, but have no idea where on the n-serve would I locate the new share 'Hi Res Music'. Am I being a bit thick here?

Cheers

David

Well not thick.

You appear to have made the new share you created into a store.

Please be aware, the serve will automatically pick up music without your intervention. All you need to do is create a share on the nas and put music in it.

Do not do anything on the Serve. The serve will do its own thing.

On the qnap goto the server page in a browser then create a new share call this 'music' or similar. Go through the wizard.

On your imac on the left hand side will be the qnap as samba, click it an you will now see your new share, double click it to mount it. Stick all your downloads and rips not done on the share in there. In time the serve will pick it up.

In terms of what you have done with your hi res music, as I understand it there is a method on it to demote the store back to a normal share.
