there is an ipad app called JRemote that works fantastically with JRiver, so no need to use a screen sharing app. However on the odd occasion i use teamviewer for this purpose.

As for sound quality i would trust your ears.

You should be able to use screen share or VNC viewer to control the mini from an iPad. I'd also look at setting up some start up scripts to start J river etc when you boot the mini (unless J river has a tick box that allows it to automatically load at start up - i don't use J river myself on my mini)

+1 for the free VNC app, it works really well for iPad control of headless Mac mini. If you're always on your internal wifi network, no need to upgrade to the paid secure / encrypted connection version That they warn you about in a pop-up...that is most useful I'd you are connecting remotely from the outside.

Also, you don't need a script to launch an app (or mount a volume) at start up, you can do this in Settings->Users and Groups by drag and drop.

Agree about the VNC app and trialling  Audirvana.

For info, a remote app it's on its away as is streaming (Qobuz at first) for Audirvana.

If interested, take a look at the Audio Circles site for optimising the Mini for audio playback.
