Firmware 4.3 - "all players now ...can use Spotify Connect..."

Posted by: gert on 29 June 2015

"...all players now support the higher resolution BBC Radio HLS format, can use Spotify Connect in multiroom mode and benefit from a host of minor bug fixes. "

does this include the uniti 1 without the streaming hardware upgrade?

Will I dare to upgrade my uniti 1 after bricking it the last time? Who is trying a uniti 1 upgrade first?

Ok to answer this myself: In the detailed information https://www.naimaudio.com/news...m-streaming-products it is written more precisely:

"Original NaimUniti and UnitiQute models and early NDX models are compatible with this new update but will only gain the new features (HLS BBC Radio support, Spotify Connect multiroom) if they are 24bit/192kHz capable. "

You've missed out the most important bit - the clock will now be right again! It's driving my missus insane...

The fix or the bug?

For me the most important fix will be the one for the "Fault 36" issue that I did run into with the 4.1 release and my uniti 1.

Much as I'm curious whether the DSP stuff makes much SQ difference, I've got a 172, so no change for me. And I can already listen to the HLS streams courtesy of my NAS.

But fixing the clock! No sarcasm, it's been doing my bleeding head in, I'm so glad it'll finally be fixed!

She keeps saying 'You paid how much for something that can't even have the correct time on it??!!'

I'm still not going to change it yet though until other people act as guinea pigs and try it out. The only thing worse than the clock not working would be to brick it so she can't watch some cookery programme played through the speakers tonight...

Hi

Due to only being in the NAIM gang for a month or so this is the first update I've seen ...... are these easy enough to do yourself or do you guys let your dealer do it?

Posted on: 29 June 2015 by nudgerwilliams

They are easy to do yourself.  Provided that you:

1. Read the instructions

2. Read the instructions again

3. Follow the instructions!

It is a bit of a faff, as you need your computer and streamer both with a wired connection to the switch / router - plus the USB cable from computer to streamer.  If you bought your streamer new then yours will have a mini-USB connector at the streamer end which you will probably have a cable already at home for.  Give yourself plenty of time the first time you do it.

I've done multiple updates on a Uniti, SuperUiniti, Qute 1 and Qute 2 and never had a problem.

It's easy peasy. Just ensure that your laptop is connected to the mains and doesn't go to sleep. I've been running this in beta for ages and the BBC HLS streams are superb. The overall sound quaility seems better too. Go for it!

Posted on: 29 June 2015 by Bart

I've updated both a Qute2 and an NDS many times with a wifi connection from computer to home network.  Wired USB connection from computer to Naim unit is required.

The only 'trick' is that, once the Naim updater software is installed, start it AFTER you've connected the USB cord from computer to Naim unit.  That way the computer will 'see' the USB connection and give you that choice (of driver) within the Naim updater.  At least this is how it works on my Macbook Pro.

Some people have been spinning the wheel for a while now.

Thank you beta testers.

We've been cooking this is the beta kitchen for quite a while,  you might like it, with or without chips

Speaking as another guinea pig here, the update went smoothly, no glitches, crashes or other nasties to report. BBC HLS streams sound great compared to the older iRadio streams, so it's worth doing for this alone (still not up to FM standards, though.) My very limited DSD collection sounds great, although I'm a bit miffed that I can't store it on my Unitiserve. Overall sound quality is great. Just do it!

Remember to follow the accompanying instructions TO THE LETTER and you can't really go wrong (unless there's a power cut!)

Can anyone elaborate on what the DAC code update does to PCM audio? Is this the same code as is shipped in the N-272?

Mine upgraded on the second attempt. The first occasion binned itself when it came to the streamer firmware bit.  This caused minor gnashing of the fangs and other parts, but all is now well.

"The HDX delivers convenience without compromise. The world’s first audiophile hard disk music player, it was also our first step into digital music delivery – and today, several years after its launch, it still sets the performance standards in its class. Invest in an HDX and you’re buying more than just a single point of access for your digitally stored music collection. "

Given this is Naim's description of my HDX, does that mean HDX owners will be getting this update, and indeed the Spotify one?

Updated ND5xs successfully with FW 4.3 and confirmed on the system status on the unit itself.

On the Naim App (version 4.5), however, under settings it shows 4.03 instead of 4.3 - strange!

Steve,

As an HDX customer myself I suspect you are as annoyed as I am at the way we are being ignored.

Mr Frog,

this is indeed a formatting error, which we also observe for firmware 4.1 and 4.2. My 272 shows on the display Factory Setttings / System Settings: Version 4.2.00, while my app shows "Uniti version 4.02.000"

So the display on the device shows firmware version 4.1/4.2/4.3, while the app shows 4.01/4.02/4.03

This formatting error is confusing for customers. I hope Naim will rectify this soon!

Steve,

The UnitiServe / HDX / NS0x are rippers / servers / hard disc players and therefore we will not be adding Spotify to the UnitiServe / HDX / NS0x in the same way that we will not be adding ripping to the Uniti / UnitiLite - the functionality isn't appropriate to the product.

Best Regards

Hi John,

No-one is ignoring UnitiServe / HDX / NS0x owners ... the last software update to the servers was December last year and prior to that they have been roughly every 12-18 months.

Best Regards

The prices of the NDX, ND5XS and NAC-N 172 XS all seem to have been increased by £100 in the UK presumably to reflect the fact that they now include Blue Tooth.  Perhaps a bit cheeky given that prices only went up 2 months ago..

Sorry Phil - due respect to you and all your valuable assistance - but I do not agree.

The HDX is sold as a source component that can also rip and serve. If this was not the case it would have no role - the UnitiServe would fullfill this. By your description nobody in their right mind would by one just to be a ripper/server.

As for the update last year - this appeared to make no practical difference as far as I could tell - merely pointing to metadata from another source - which at least on my machine I have never noticed using.

I accept that Naim did provide updates prior to this (radio/flac conversion etc.) but it's been pretty lame of late.

This latest news that the streamers get an update to BBC HLS streams - but is silent in saying that HDX users can expect an update in due course only reinforces speculation that Naim have all but abandoned this platform.

John.

Has this update rectified the problem with the radio switching on randomly? Or must we still switch to a different input?

Posted on: 29 June 2015 by MartinKocurek

I have updated and have feelings it sounds better (NDX). But maybe it is "just" psychoacoustic effect that I expect improvement and think I hear it ?
