Superuniti not picking up my Buffalo NAS/ Twonkey server

Posted by: Steve Smith on 30 June 2015

i've had my Superuniti for a few months. I decided to try streaming when my wife wanted a NAS drive to store her many photos. An IT engineer fitted the Buffalo Linkstation 220 NAS with built-in Twonky server but the Superunti displays <No servers> when I select it from the remote control. The SU happily connects to my Lenovo PC from which I can stream my music files. I intened to use sbpoweramp to rip my CDs in lossless FLAC.

Any ideas why my SU is not seeing the NAS?

i am a novice.

The first thing I'd try is a full restart of every device on your network. Turn everything off, then start your router. When it's fully up and running, start the NAS, and so on. That might work. I'm not familiar with your NAS, or with Twonky, so if the problem lies there I'm not the person to help you.

Also.....are you using WiFi on the SU? It really needs a wired connection...and how is your NAS connected to your network?

Thanks for replying.

i tried switching off and on in the order suggested but no change.

Any other suggestions? Perhaps from someone using Twonky or a Buffalo Linkstation NAS?

If the SU is anything like an HDX then have you got the NAS in the correct workgroup, i.e. Naim?

Twonky may be installed but not switched on, or it could be switched on but not pointed at the folder in which you have the music. Or that folder may not be designated as a shared one, and thus not visible to external devices.

You should be able to sort this by logging in to the server from your computer using the browser interface or Buffalo's dedicated program for PC – see here – and then go to Extensions/Media Server.

The fact your SU can see your computer and stream from it is a pretty clear indication that all is well at the SU end, and the problem is in the NAS or the Twonky implementation.

That's very useful. Thank you both. My IT guy will need to log in to do that as he has the admin password. Will let you know how we get on.

No probs. Worth getting hold of the log-in details from the IT guy when he sorts it, as you can then go in and tinker stuff like this yourself, update firmware when required and so on. It's suprisingly easy, even though the Buffalo browser interface isn't as intuitive as, say, those provided by QNAP or Synology.

At the risk of banging a familiar drum, might be worth getting your IT guy to install MinimServer on the Buffalo, as this server software plays much more nicely with Naims than does Twonky.

Point him at this page for guidance.

Thank you for the advice. The folder was nor designated as shared, as you suggested. All working now, apart from the Superuniti misbehaving by randomly muting itself. Hmmph.
