Urgent: How to connect unitiserve via ethernet

Posted by: keilic on 01 July 2015

Hi all,

I've been away from naim a while.  But have returned to it via the Unitiserve (US).

Now, I read from here that US is best connected via ethernet and into the router.

So off I went and bought 2 pairs of audioquest cinnamon ethernet cables.

I'm a complete novice. How do I use the 2 ethernet cables I have to connect my US to my amps (Devialet 800)?

I thought it might be simple.  But I'm not getting any sound.  So must be more complicated than that.  Thinking about it, how does the router know US is sending it music.   How does it know which port the music is supposed to go to?  (There are 4 ethernet ports on this router.)

Any tips would be highly appreciated!

Thanks

Just connect them both to the router while switched off. Turn them on and the network should link them up automatically. Don't forget to follow the correct procedure to shut down the US. What seems surprising is that your dealer has not told you how to do it.

I'm not familiar with your Devialet 800, but I can't see why it shouldn't work (unless there are compatibility issues between it and the Naim server?)

If you have a spare digital cable (coax or Toslink) you could try a direct connection, controlled with N-Serve. This may not be how you want to use it, but at least it would get you up and running and confirm that the US is working.

Other than that, it could just be your network misbehaving. No harm in trying a full restart of all devices on it. A switch might be a better way to connect devices together rather than your router.

Hi HH and Chris,

Thanks for the replies.

Direct connection via DC1 works fine.  I was eager to try the ethernet option.

I just turned everything off and on again.  Properly (presed and held naim icon on US).  Still sadly no sound.

Note the devialet has a built in dac.  It has an ethernet port.

Any other tips?  I know it might sound trivial, but how does the US know to send music to

devialet (since signal is first going into a router, which has to receive the music then direct it to the right output port)?  Is there any configuration needed on US?

Thanks

A switch is definitely the way to go, but in the meantime connecting both to the router will work.

The Devialet amp won't work this way via Ethernet with the US. You need the Air app installed on a suitable machine as the Devialet isn't UPnP compatible (yet).

As others have suggested, if using the US, connect to the Devialet digital input via S/PDIF (coaxial cable)

The US does not actually send the music to the DV800. The Devaliet must pull the music off of the US.  Their should be some way of pointing the Devaliet to the US. Is their a uPNP input or something similar?

Thought it might.

Just to clarify to the OP - you'll still need to connect your US to your router to use the control apps and allow it to connect to the internet when needed.

£18,000 and not upnp compatible......

IC

upnp.  Just googled.  This is the answer to my questions how traffic gets directed.  that means all devices connected must be upnp for them to be intelligent.  Router, US, but unfortunately not devialet.

Let me check out the devialet chat site.  I was reading comments from there too.  And I thought they said similar that ethernet was the way to go.

Yep - the Dialog box (£249) is the solution though - aggregates a number of different sources, UPnP streaming services etc etc.

since u have been running devialet for a while, what is the best way to connect to it?  are u using ethernet and is it via some dialog box u mentioned?  How does that compare with direct coaxial?

thanks

I don't use the Dialog box myself. After S/PDIF (from a naim NDX), Ethernet (directly wired rather than wireless) i've settled on USB via a Mac Mini running Audivarna +. The Unitiserve should give you very good results though and is a neat one stop solution to ripping and serving.

Worth checking on the Devialet chat site as there are lots of different source solutions (and lots of different opinions)

Enjoy your 800
