Muso - internet radio drop outs again.
Posted by: Super on 02 July 2015
I've had this problem before and i thought i more or less cure it, but this last week has been pretty bad for some reason. The muso runs through netgear router to a TP link adaptor to the virgin hub upstairs and has been good until lately....and yes it's the same on wi-fi. A particular bad station for a drop out is radio caroline - classic rock and i wonder if anyone of you could help me out by trying it on your muso to see if it's just a bad station (it won't take long to see if it's bad).

What's the 'TP link adapter' how does this connect to the virgin hub?
It uses the ring main through your house to connect to the Virgin hub. But like I said its been fine up to about a week ago. Last night it was that bad I played music off a USB stick but it was only playing a couple of seconds off each track (the "next track" symbol kept flashing). But after a complete power down and on again it seems to be ok now. I'm not having much luck with the muso, this is my third one and I really don't want to go to number 4.

arrrr.... networking over the mains... Okay. With networking over the mains (PLC or Homeplug) it's mains noise that upsets things. You need to ensure that the mains is clean wherever the homeplug adapters are plugged in. This means you don't want any mains noise from things like plug in switch mode power supplies or CFL bulbs or LED bulbs, chargers etc.... The best way to stop this getting onto the mains is to use homeplug devices which have a filtered mains passthrough socket. So you plug the homeplug unit direct into the wall then EVERYTHING mains powered near/around the homeplug device is plugged into a multiway strip and then the multiway strip is plugged into the filtered mains socket on the back of the homeplug device. I'm not saying this is a 100% fix but 9 times out of 10 using mains passthrough homeplug adapters in this manner sorts the problem.
I don't think this is a faulty Muso.

Fine for me here...

But it's been fine for a couple of months then last week the problem started and even on wi fi direct to the hub is the same problem. When I'm on the app with the i pad you can see the buffering goes 100% 90 70 50 and when it reached 30% it drops out. Sometimes it recovers but mostly does not. One of the radio stations seems to work fine with no drop outs, so how do you work that out ?
There are many things that can affect an Internet Radio feed ... it is *HIGHLY UNLIKELY* that there is a fault with the mu-so that is affecting only a single Internet Radio feed.
To rule out the EOM / PLA devices please try connecting your mu-so to your router directly via an Ethernet cable and see if that makes a difference.

I thought you might say that Phil, but it's strange how all of a sudden it's started to play up. I shall report back when i've done the direct into the hub test.

I have the muso right next to the router and it is still dropping out whether it is ethernet cable connected or on wi fi. So that rules out any mains interference on the ethernet plug adaptor theory.

It sounds as if the router is not maintaining that link well. I've had similar problems and resolved them by having only one cable out of the router feeding into a netgear switch, then connecting the Naim into that switch.
At the moment i am listening to BBC R2 which is playing through to the muso via "Air play" from my pc and not one drop out, which tells me it is feeding off the same router perfectly.

Is your PC running off the wireless connection to your router though? It seems to me that routers are generally setup to prioritise the wireless connection above the wired connections unless you alter this in the firmware of the router.
You may be correct and it is the Mu-So, but I wouldn't trust the router operation in my experience. My Uniti2 had real problems with drop-outs when wired directly to a router which I thought would be the best setup
The pc is ethernet connected.....no wi fi.

Then I'd take the Mu-So back and get it replaced at this point. There may be issues to do with buffering, etc but it sounds like you've tried all the reasonable potential solutions
I'm trying to see if there is anything i could do in the hub settings, but nothings changed yet. Thanks for your help anyway.
The interference issue was to do with the connection using the tplink adapters; I mean the connection back to the modem over the tplink adapters might be dodgy. I'm suggesting a proper lan cable from router back to modem.

Forget the tp link adapters for now, i connected the muso direct into the virgin hub with ethernet cable and wi fi right next to it and it still drops out. Listening to radio stations with the pc and the muso at the same time the muso would drop out, the pc wouldn't. It's as if the muso hasn't got the processing power. Low bit stations (64 kb/s) seem to hold on, all the pre selects on the muso (except one) drop out, how weird is that ? Hope this helps.
You said that the router connects to the virgin hub (modem) using the tplink adapters. If that's so then the internet is coming to the router via the tplink adapters. Have I got this wrong? If the internet's coming over the tplink adapters then it's logical that this is a potential cause of the problem.
Yes that is right what you said, but for the point of elimination I took the muso straight on to the main Virgin hub and the problem still exists. Also I have blu ray player, media player and an android box which works off the other router via the TP link and they all work perfectly.
Hi Super,
If you are only experiencing problems with Radio Caroline then I cannot in any way suspect the mu-so itself as having an issue - it would have to be that the stream from the provider is becoming interrupted to sufficient extent that the mu-so buffering is unable to cover the latency. It's not a fault with the mu-so.

Hi phil, no it's not just radio caroline that is the only one, it's all the radio stations on my pre selects except one. It's just that radio caroline is the worst one. There must be something around here that is giving off a strong RFI. I think what i'll have to do is to take the muso round to a friends or a relatives house and use it on their broadband and see what happens.
