Playing DSD Files from Naim App using Asset
Posted by: Xenasys on 04 July 2015
Hi All
I have installed some DSD64 Files onto my NAS and am using Asset to send to SU, weird stuff is going on, I can play the files using remote and or keys on SU, they play fine and display reports DSD64.
However if I try on App when I select play from this track it reports 0 Tracks were added and nothing plays its fine with other files, anyone had similar issues?

The app doesn't do much other than link the NAS to SU - it plays fine for me with NDX & Synology Media Server (& I've been beta testing DSD) & it seems all others with DSD.
Try clearing the UPnP cache & while at it clear the Image cache as well
Hi Mike
I tried clearing cache still same issue, I have asset on another headless PC I will upgrade it and try that
Thanks
Paul
I don't understand, its the Asset on the NAS?, as that is were it needs to be

Sorry Mike should have been clearer, NAS is just a WD 4TB My Cloud so running asset on PC going to buy a QNAP at some point then will put Asset on it.
I have installed asset on headless PC and everything seems fine, playing and adding tracks via app, existing PC still same problem is their anything to configure specifically for DSD?
If not then will use newly installed version
Thanks
Paul

Thanks Alan
OK, I don't know Cloud stuff so I'm out
Happy its OK

Xenasys, are you using the production R5 release of Asset? I think you need this for DSD. I'm running this on a headless Win 7 PC and it works fine, well almost... I have an occasional slight glitch in playback on DSD that I've never heard on PCM - a half second of less pause during playback. I'm still trying to work out whether this is a feature of the latest R5, an issue with the latest firmware, or a problem that's always been there, but I've never noticed it. Note - this is not the micro-glitch between tracks that is a known issue.

Hey Dave yes the production version, the PC I have the problem on was running R5 Beta and I upgraded then had the issue with the DSD not working on app.
I upgraded an old version to R5 and it seems fine will let you know if any other issues
Cheers

Hi Paul,
had similar problems with Assett and had to re-install version 5. Works properly now.
How do you manage your library ? I use MediaMonkey for tagging etc , but that is not showing DSD files

Hi Iver
That's what I will try, for managing tagging I use MP3Tag and Foobar for DR and Sonore for extracting DSD from my SACD
Cheers

Just a thought if you are using the latest version of Asset that supports DSD, are you DSF or DFF files?
DSD, or sometimes called DSD64, can be stored in two file types, DSF or DFF. These two files contain the same audio sample data, but only the DSF format allows metadata to be used. Therefore if using DFF files, Asset (and mediamonkey) might not have anything to add to its index, so the files remain invisible.
It is only Asset R5 on Windows that will handle DSD files (in DSF/DFF formats).
R5 version for NASes, Raspberry Pi, OS/X are R4, will follow, soon, I hope, as at present I am running two UPnP servers with DSD files in a separate directory and in some cases duplicate DSD & previously converted PCM FLAC versions from foobar2000.
MP3TAG works fine with metadata on DSDDSF (DSDDFF doesn't take metadata just like WAV).
The Sonore iso2dsd is a great utility for extracting the DSDDSF files from a ripped SACD, using an early PS3
There is also a utility from HFX for converting DSDDFF to DSDDSF and a new editor utility from TASCAM that will allow editing of the DSD files and but also conversion from DSD256 & DSD128 to DSD64. Previously I was using part of the Pyramix suite from Merging Technologies, to convert DSD256/128 files from download sources, which is really pro-studio focused.
Haven't tried converting DSD64 to ALAC (for iPhone & iPod) directly yet, as I had already converted my SACDs to FLAC before this update but think this is possible with dBPowerAmp.
Also checkout Roon as a Music library manager, it looks up all the metadata, album & artist reviews, artwork, detects corrupt tracks, duplicates, alternative performances and track location by file path which can be very useful to find a track that is incorrectly tagged.
