Minimserver question

Posted by: Scooot on 05 July 2015

Hi all,
I have just installed minimserver on my qnap so I can transcode to wav.
I have been using folder view on twonky and I am in favour of using folder view on minimserver.
When I choose a artist then a album I see -
>>tag view
Then under this the album name.

Can minimserver be configured to remove this >>tag view from sight ?.
If so,how is this done ?.

Cheers scott

Hi,
Yes that it.
All I need to figure out now is how to remove unwanted search items from the browse tree.I will only use folder view so I would like to remove other option.

Sorry, off topic a bit but still related. Looks like I'll kick my malfunctioning UnitiServe to the curb but will need to batch convert WAV to FLAC with DBpoweramp to clean up the meta data so the albums will display properly. I have converted a handful of files via DBpa and have MinimServer set to transcode FLAC to WAV but the albums are still screwed up and display fragmented and can play only one song at a time.

What gives?

The way to easily fix this is to get the Serve to convert them all in bulk. Otherwise I think you need to convert the albums in dbpoweramp and then add the album tag, which is what's missing. A few of my albums were like this and I had to fix them one at a time. You may be able to convert in bulk, but you'll have to tag each one. This is the downside in keeping US rips in wav.

HH, I remember you addressing to me previously. Problem is the new USA distributor has made a complete mess of my US. In two successive times for repair and now they are having my dealer run diagnostics and they are not happy. Plus, this has been going on for months first occurring last November. Anyhow, I don't have a working US to convert and I would like to get my NAS sorted so I can get on with the show. I'm not a happy camper right now to say the least. I suppose I could add the tag faster than re-ripping 1000 CDs but I'm prepared to rip them all again with DB. Thanks for your response.

I can indeed see why you are not the happiest of bunnies, and you have my sympathy. Find an album on the NAS, convert it to FLAC and then add the tags. You will find that the track numbers and names are ok. If you use the control key and highlight all the tracks you can tag the whole album at once.

You should be able to batch convert (it will take over a day to chug through, but then you can tag at leisure. It's got to be quicker than ripping them again.

Good luck!

HH, Many thanks. I travel but will give it a go tonight when I get home. May need to bug you tomorrow regarding the process of tagging.

HH, Ok I'm able to re-tag in DB within converter. However not following you with regard to control key. So need that little trick. For now doing one track at a time. Also is it necessary to convert to FLAC other than saving space?

Hi, MinimServer can read WAV file tagging (I believe both variants) so a DB ripped and meta data edited WAV file will be fully referencable using MinimServer. So indeed FLAC in this scenario is simply giving you a space advantage.

However if you ever decide to use the UnitiServe again, regrettably as far as I am aware as it was several years since I used a US, the Naim product still does not read any of the WAV metadata methods, (please someone correct me if this has now changed) Therefore FLAC would have an advantage here as metadata would be readable with the US.

Simon, So DB potentially rips WAV with more metadata? From other posts here and elsewhere FLAC, AIFF etc have a better transferrable metadata container if you will than WAV. Before I had the US issues I did comparisons between US WAVE/FLAC, XLD variants al through the US and couldn't pick a winner. Same file comparison about a moth ago between US vs MinimServer. If necessary I am prepared to re-rip all my CD's with DB to NAS then add another HCDR to my 282 for improved performance.

When you are in windows explorer, hold the control key and click on all the tracks - they will all highlight in blue. Then right click and you can then add the album title to all the tracks at the same time.

Yes, selecting the 1st track then the last while holding shift will do the same thing. Sill have to type in the track name and number for each but it does carry the album title etc.

HH, its not letting me add album title to all the tracks even with the control key unless I'm screwing it up as I still have to add initially the album but then each track name, number genre etc. If this is the case I would be better off re-ripping I think.

Hi M, I don't know about more meta data per se, but dBPoweramp writes WAV metadata using the official wav method, which is the INFO list method; this is what MS Windows Explorer and BWF editors access for example and also the ID3 method which is the adopted 'unofficial' meta data construct borrowed from MP3 which some UPnP media servers and media archiving apps access for example.

AIFF uses ID3,I believe, and FLAC uses Vorbis Comments. It's probably fair to say Vorbis Comments and ID3 are best for consumer music metadata, where as WAV INFO list method is better suited for media creation...

Any way using quality software like dBPoweramp you can convert from WAV to FLAC and vica versa whilst preserving most if not all of the meta data.

So did you have to type in every song and song number in as you went along?

Posted on: 10 July 2015 by hungryhalibut

No, they were all there. It should be the same for you.

Posted on: 10 July 2015 by mackb3

Bummer, No such luck. It retains the album and genre after I put it in the first time but not the songs are  not showing.

Posted on: 10 July 2015 by hungryhalibut

Have you tried finding the album in windows explorer and converting to FLAC? my memory is hazy on this, but I have a horrible feeling now that I did have to enter the titles of tracks. Oh dear.

Posted on: 10 July 2015 by mackb3

No, using DBpa. Not sure how to do it in explorer. At this rate I'll just re-rip if the UnitiServe ends up out of the picture.
