Naim control app and BubbleUPnP lose contact with UQ2
Posted by: Jota on 06 July 2015
Hi.
I'm having a problem that is increasing in occurrence lately whereby the app can't connect with the UQ2. It can either be a complete disconnect where it can't see the UQ2 at all or a partial one where I can select radio stations I've saved but not browse through all radio stations.
Sometimes I can browse radio stations but it can't find my server (either Minimserver or DiskStation).
Switching the UQ2 off for 20 seconds then back on again seems to sort it out for a while but then inevitably it fails to connect again.
It's the same story with the app on the Nexus 9 and with BubbleUPnP.
The UQ2 is ethernet connected to a Netgear switch, just like most of the rest of my gear.
Nothing else on my network including 3 tablets, 1 smart phone, 2 TV's, 2 PS4's, 1 BluRay player, 2 PC's a Synology NAS and a Synology expansion has any problems connectivity wise.
How does the wifi connectivity work in your network? You mention the UQ2 is connected to a Netgear switch. Is that actually a router with a wifi access point, or is the switch connected to a separate router / wifi point?
Hey nudger.
The switch is connected to my router and everything else in the room is connected to the switch. So that's a PC, 2 Synology, a PS4, smart TV and Blu Ray player all wired to the switch. Tablets and phone have wireless connection to the router.
Sounds like that should all work fine then. What is the router?
Have you read this sticky thread? sounds like a discovery issue.

It does sound. Multicast discovery related.. An area that seemingly much consumer/home network kit struggles with for some reason.
My suspicion would be the wifi for the Naim app. My suggestion get a cheap little Apple Airport Express wifi access point...plug into your switch, and create a new wifi SSID separate from your router wifi. This new SSID you just use for your iOS/Android device you run the Naim app on. You should find discovery then reliably works. (Apple also uses discovery in its AirPlay protocol so ensures it is supported properly). I am also assuming you are using a simple unmanaged Netgear switch... That is the best type to use here.

I just did a scan and no Bonjour services to seen anywhere.

There is sometimes a delay in Bonjouyr services showing up in NetAnalyser, but assuming you still have none that suggests the wireless bit of your network is the problem. I am way off being an expert in this, just learnt some bits and pieces through trial and error and the others in the forum.
I assume the wireless bit in your network is handled by the router. What is that? The box provided by your ISP? If so you may need to change that for something else, or do as S-i-S suggests (he is an exper BTW) and use an Airport Express to provide wifi access.
I have Ubiqitu Unifi wireless access points in my home network which work a treat (though expensive).
Update. I bought a wireless printer and set it up today and have just rescanned my network with Net Analyzer.
So the printer, both my PC and my sons, and my Synology Diskstation have the Bonjour services.
The UQ2 doesn't.
Is the UQ2 at fault here?
You said you did a scan previously and no Bonjour services were seen, and now you can see them apart from the UQ2. What has changed other than adding a printer?
It sounds like something is unstable somewhere - hence the suggestion of using an Airport Express as the wifi bridge

I think I'll give the Apple thing a go. Thanks Simon.

I agree. Since I moved to Ubiquiti gear (Edgerouter PoE for the main router connected to the cable modem, Unifi WiFi access point connected to it), my home network in an electrically very noisy neighborhood (lots of WiFI APs, bad powerline noise), all the glitches I had seen before with Apple networking gear went away.
I think I'll give the Apple thing a go. Thanks Simon.
Good, let us know how you get on.

One quick questions Simon. If my iPad is connected to the Apple Airport which is itself connected to my unmanaged switch which is connected to my router, can the iPad still access the internet in this set up?
So a summary of the proposed connection - iPad > Apple Airport > Netgear Switch > my ISP Router.

Yes
Airport Express came today, I set it up and my iPad is connected to it. I then scanned this with Network Analyzer and still no Bonjour Services on the UQ2.
Mine and my son's PC plus my Diskstation all have Bonjour services but the UQ2 doesn't.
So how can this be an issue with my ISP router?
Weird. UQ2 is a wired connection to the Netgear switch. The Airport Express is a wired connection to the same switch. Your iPad has a wireless connection to the Airport Express. Can you do all the normal things from your iPad - browse the net etc?
Would expect this to all work fine. Suggest you send an email to Naim Support - email in the sticky at the top. if necessary someone will log in to your network remotely and help you debug.

Is your AE connected to the switch, rather than direct to the streamer? Also, try a full restart of every device on your network. Turn the router back on first, wait for it to settle, then start everything else one at a time. Even if this doesn't solve your problem, it's worth doing occasionally.

Yes it's connected to the switch. I've just done a full restart of the router and everything on the network, rescanned it with Network Analyzer and the UQ2 still doesn't show the Bonjour service.
My printer, 2 PC's and Diskstation do.

I can browse the net on the iPad. The Airport Express is wired to the switch too.
I emailed support so will leave it in their capable hands now but thanks to everyone who offered advice here. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this. It's possibly something simple I'm overlooking.
Hope you get sorted quickly. With your configuration it should "just work" so something odd going on.
Well, I have new firmware and Bonjour!
However my NAP 100 appears to have died.
Great that you have it working. Do you recall which firmware it was on previously? Sorry I did not suggest this before!
Hope the NAP100 recovers, and you find a good use for your Airport Express, which I suspect you don't need either You can use it to provide an Airplay input into your Qute if you fancy messing around with that.

It was on 3.22 previously...
The dealer will get the NAP100 sorted out and everything should be hunky-dory again...

Thanks all for your help and advice and thanks to Naim support staff for the swift resolution.
