HDX and CD ripping

Posted by: Steve Hall on 17 July 2015

I'm beginning to notice that my HDX is becoming selective on which CD's it recognises and wants to rip.

For example, got the ELO box set via the Amazon Prime sale, and it just wont rip it.

Is this a CD quality issue, copy protection, or my mechanism needs some help from the Salisbury doctors?

You could try ripping to something else like a PC. When I was ripping my CDs my PC wouldn't rip some but an external DVD worked with most of the failures.

I have noticed with occasional discs that they will play in my car and on my Quad CDP99, but not play in my Unitilite or be rippable in my Unitiserve.

This has usually turned out to be a known copy protection issue. If you google the name of the CD together with the words copy protection or ripping or similar, you may turn up information about how that artist or that record company protected CDs at that time. It won't help you rip the CD but at least might make you decide you don't need to send your HDX back to Salisbury!

I would suspect that it's down to copy protection too, although my Unitiserve has never failed to rip a CD. Can you rip on a computer? If so, will the HDX allow that rip to be added to its download folder, or perhaps see the album on an attached USB drive, computer hard drive or similar. I'm not certain that this will work, but maybe there's a workaround somewhere.

When I had this issue with the HDX I'd make a copy of the disc on the PC with CD RW drive. The HDX then always ripped the troublesome copy CD without issues.

Worth a try if you have a CD RW drive and don't want to invest in DBpoweramp or some such.

Download folder?

So, in bad form in replying to my own questions, is the "Download" folder only a 2Tb option?

If so, mine hasnt got that facility.

Yes, if you don't have the current gen. 2TB version this isn't an option. I believe it's an upgrade option should you want to store downloads etc. as well as CD rips.

Hi Steve,

I am seeing the same issue with my NS01, in fact have just tried to rip a CD this morning that just wasn't seen ...I am reverting to RubyRip for these discs; what a pain.

I have yet to upgrade to the latest firmware ....have you?

I'd filter that info across to Naim support, as in many cases they can identify which copy-protection (if that) or metadata-service (if that) related issue it falls under, and queue that for internal analysis / possible fix.

Could also be the optical drive heading south.

Went to rip a CD on my HDX this morning, and the display just started cycling between a few screens incluring the 'Please Wait...'  one, and one saying 'system error'. Tried again with the same results so powered down and turned on again. Worked fine. A possible beginning of a problem, or just one of those things?

If that's the Classic Albums Collection, it isn't copy protected - I ripped it the other week without a hitch (albeit on a PC). If that helps.

Yes it is Gary, and indeed I ripped it on my Mac. So, think i'll give Naim a ring.
