HLS to Multiroom
Posted by: cgarden on 21 July 2015
I have a Qute 1 24/96 which does not support the new BBC HLS streams. It does however support Multiroom as a client and I do have an ND5 XS in another room.
I've discovered and can use Multiroom to stream to the BBC HLS streams to the Qute. I've no idea how Multiroom works (does the lead streamer re-broadcast to the clients?), but the question is: am I getting all the HD goodness or is it being re-packaged in a low-rent / low-bandwidth format?
Have to say it sounds just fine, but I haven't spent much time with it yet.

As iRadio goes, these HLS streams aren't bad, but they certainly aren't Hi-Res, whatever that means. They are still compressed, lossy streams, and they certainly don't sound as good as FM on my Superuniti. There may be some degradation, especially if you're using WiFi for multiroom, but personally I wouldn't worry about it.

In the Naim app, if you select the Qute while the radio is playing, what does it say on the now playing screen?
That screen usually has some info about the type of stream that's playing, including format etc. But I don't know how it works with multi-room setups.

Chris - I meant HD in relative terms of course; but it's the best I've heard Radio 6 and 5 extra.
Dave - no stream quality information on the display or the app. The Qute is being very secretive.
