This dropped unannounced mid-week as a pretty complete album of plenty good enough new Wilco tracks. All quite short, none probably really essential but heck it is free if you join the mailing list.

Review here too

...and on repeat listening I think it is largely really interesting. Bit looser and more raucous in places.

C'mon folks, it is free. Does nobody else like Wilco.?

I'll be happy to give it a listen if they're willing to send me a free CD or LP

Posted on: 26 July 2015 by Bruce Woodhouse

...I could burn one but they may lock me up. Or is it fine to copy a freebie?

The band will probably be grateful for pushing them to a wider audience and doing some free PR, whereas the label will have you publically flogged and will advise them against doing it again because people are making copies of it.

What annoys me is that I have to enter CC details to get a free album, and I'm already a prime member on Amazon UK.

Must confess to not knowing much of them. Recently Jeff Tweedy produced? the latest Richard

Thompson album.

OK I got the album through their website.

If you enjoy there is a brilliant back catalogue to explore. 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot' one of the finest Americana albums of the last twenty years IMHO*. Summerteeth an early favourite of many, last year's 'The Whole love' very fine too but actually very few misses in their output for me.

Jeff Tweedy also released 'Sukierae' with his son last year as a side project, it is excellent. He also collaborated with Billy Bragg on the Woody Guthrie tribute albums Mermaid Avenue Vols 1+2.

There are few artists that I would but on the date of release come what may without even listening to samples first. Wilco are one of them.

Update: album won't download about 5 attempts, so I 'll give up.

Bruce - right with you on this one !!

"Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" a desert island disc for me too. "A Ghost Is Born" almost as good.

Wilco and Jim O'Rourke a perfect marriage....

Also enjoy the more raw forerunner Uncle Tupelo as well as the other offshoot Son Volt (especially "Straightaways").

Have you heard Califone? Try "Roots and Crowns" or "Heron King Blues"

Phew! Thought I was all alone with this one. Good to find a kindred spirit.

I have tried Califone and it just did not hit the spot. I must give Son Volt a go. In return try Hiss Golden Messenger (especially last year's 'Lateness of Dancers' or 'Haw') or Dolorean 'Unfazed'. Both lack the experimental edge of the best Wilco albums but good American country inflected rock.

I am really enjoying Star Wars.Bit inconsistent but plenty of interest, far better than most artists throwaway stuff.

Another Wilco fan here.  Star Wars is definitely growing on me after a few listens...

I'm not sure Wilco envisioned this as "throw-away" material.  I think they're just cognizant of the value of an album in a world of pay-per-play streaming and YouTube listening and can afford to pass up the relatively meager revenue stream from a 'normal' record release.  Plus, they've basically given away an album before with YHF - which arguably made the band as well known as they are today.  Seems like they're just taking a page out of their own playbook.  It sounds to me like a serious effort and a fully-formed album.  I think this process of album release is a strategic one on their behalf.

Cheers Bruce,

Nice - enjoyed especially the HGM. See that Megafaun are backing up..they are favourites here.

On the u tube "similar to" HGM was Sun Kil Moon who I listened to today - "Ghosts of the Great Highway"    what a cracker!

Another couple on the less experimental side of Wilco :

Malcolm Holcome  "A Hundred Lies"

Lambchop "How I Quit Smoking" or "What Another Man Spills"

I have the album, I haven't listen to it much. Can't crumble for free though.

I also like his work on the Neil Finn + Radiohead + Eddie Vedder et al group '7 Worlds Collide'

Had one play, first track is rubbish, not too impressed with the rest of it to be honest.

That's not the best review II've ever seen, first track rubbish and the rest bad too!

Posted on: 31 July 2015 by BigH47

No I didn't say the rest was bad, just that I wasn't impressed with it, as far as I know it's a very good album that I didn't like much. First track was really bad, but short though.

I really like it.

Not a Wilco listener but this album is waaay more guitar infused than I had ever expected of these guys.

Nice Mark Bolan feel in many places.

Even on crappy mp3, it's plenty sonic

Will look this one up. Saw them live in Melbourne about a year ago. One of the best live bands I have ever seen. Love these guys.
