Tosca cd recommendation
Posted by: PaulH on 27 July 2015
Can anyone please recommend a good recording of Tosca on CD - I have a 'highlights' cd with Maria Callas and Tito Gobi but am looking for a good recording of the whole opera.
Thanks in advance!
Well, I think the Callas version is hard to beat, so why not just get the complete version, not just the highlights.
If you want a version in better sound try Mirella Freni & Placido Domingo conducted by Sinopoli on DG. This version has a young Bryn Terfel singing Angelotti.
Thanks Morton - The Callas version is good but I was trying to find if there was something better sound quality wise.
I'll try the DG Sinopoli version.
As an alternative you could also try a DVD, Gramophone recommends the recent ROH issue with Angela Gheorghiu, Bryn Terfel & Jonas Kaufmann.
I think I may get this myself; here is the review.

I'll try the DG Sinopoli version.
Warner Classics have released all Callas remastered including Tosca.
Tosca! My two cents for a top three for allround excellence: Sinopoli's is a great recording, as mentionrd above. Karajan recorded the opera twice, second time with Ricciarelli as Tosca and Raimondi as a slithery Scarpia - a bit of an underdog but I love it, not least for a stunning Carreras. Late 50s, Victor recorded the opera with Bjoerling, Milanov and Warren, under Leinsdorf - these guys could sing the phonebook and make you cry although none of the principals sound at their absolute best.

Leontyne Price as Tosca for me, every time. A wonderful performance that was captured superbly by the Decca engineers for RCA.
Thanks everyone.
I have ordered the remastered Callas/Gobi version for now - I guess I'll pick up others along the way as it's always nice to hear different performances!
CD arrived yesterday so I'll give it a good listen tomorrow when I have time to sit and enjoy.
