Newcomer trying to edit data and completely lost!
Posted by: Kevin Joseph on 01 August 2015
Hello, first of all please forgive me if this is in the 'wrong place'! I am trying to edit data in n-serve on my iMac and am completely lost. Can anybody possibly help me with a screen share? I am not very good at understanding and following written instructions (and I cannot blame that completely on my old age I am afraid!). If that is not possible, I would be very grateful for any other kind of help.
Thanks,
Kevin.
You need to get a lot more specific I am afraid.

Thank you for your reply. So, for instance I have an album of violin Concertos and would like to edit the data so that I can see that the first 3 tracks are Mozart, the fourth by Schubert and the last 3 by Mendelssohn. Now when I display the album in n-serve I cannot see where and how I would add information!
When I had a UnitiServe, I did the editing in the nServe iPad app. You just hit the edit button and can change the album name, artist, genre and tracks. I think you'll just have to fiddle about until you find it.

Is it a cd you ripped on the uServe, or that you added to its Downloads folder?
Are you using n-Serve for iPhone/iPad, or n-Serve for OS X?

Thank you for responding - I have tried but without success!

Thank you for responding. I think I added it to a download folder! I am using n-Serve on my iMac.
Just try more options. You can't break it.

Thank you, but I do not understand your response and I am trying but I am just not sure what I am supposed to be doing!
You need to find the edit button. The problem I have is that I no longer have a UnitiServe. As you said, you need to see a screen shot. Is there a user manual on the Naim website?

I cannot find one I'm afraid; but thank you for trying.
Hi Kevin
If you added the music file to the Downloads folder that means it is not a CD you ripped on the Unitiserve, right?
If that is the case, you cannot edit the so called 'metadata' using the Naim app.
In this case you need to make the edit using some software on your PC or Mac (DB Poweramp is a popular piece of software to do this).
However if you have ripped a CD via the Unitiserve, you can edit a lot, and you do this using the nServe app.
Have a try.
Find a CD ripped on Unitiserve and then have a look in nServe app.
You should see a button with a pencil in a square (if you are looking an an iPhone/iPod Touch).
This is the edit button.
Press it and then you are able to change the cover, and edit all of the album info.
Let us know how you get on

Thank you ChrisH. Yes, I think it was a download and not a CD ripped. So, at least I know now that I cannot edit without some software - I shall look tomorrow (it is now late for me and I have to close down now!).
I tried a CD that I definitely 'ripped' but I cannot find the button with a pencil in a square in! I appreciate your help and shall look tomorrow to see if you can help me find this pencil!
thank you again.
In N-Serve, if you Control-Click on an album or track, you get a dropdown list of options (see screenshot.) Select 'edit metadata' and you get a box with various fields you can edit. Simple.
Having said that, I've found that on the odd album, metadata reverts to the original after you've finished editing, which is somewhat irritating.
As mentioned above, you can edit ripped CDs, but not downloads.
Thank you again, I really appreciate your help and especially the picture (more work for you but very helpful for me!).
The control-click was a good tip for me (I did not know about that); however when I tried it my 'Edit Metadata" is greyed out.
By the way, I just figured out how to reply to you without the quotation!!!!!!!!!
Kevin.

Sounds like you're trying to edit files in your downloads folder, rather than CD rips?
Unless there is something I am not understanding ( and that is certainly possible!) I am pretty certain that this is on of my CD's that I owned before buying Naim and so once I bought my Naim server I simply 'ripped' nearly all my CD's. It was only later that I bought and added a few downloads.
I've no idea why it would be a problem. Is this the case with other CD rips, or just the one you want to edit?
I have closed down my iMac for the night but I shall try to get back to this tomorrow evening. I do hope you will also be able to continue with this, if not tomorrow, then during the week.
Thank you for your time and patience.
Kevin.
Kevin, you had it right about 4 responses ago.
If this is a cd you added to your Downloads folder, then forget n-Serve; it won't edit the metadata for albums you've added yourself. Use other editing software. For the Mac, something VERY simple is a little program called Tag. Something more comprehensive, and what I use now (after using Tag for a couple of years) is Metadatics.
For cd's you rip using the UnitiServe, you must use n-Serve to edit. Only n-Serve can edit UnitiServe's own rips.
So to summarize: UnitiServe rips - edit with n-Serve. The option won't be 'greyed out.' Other music you've previously ripped, downloaded, etc. - edit with Tag or Metadatics or dbPoweramp. These options are mutually exclusive; one solution for UnitiServe's own rips, one for music you add yourself.
Have a good evening,
Bart
And this is the screen in nServe app on an iPod Touch or iPhone if you have access to either of those which shows the edit button of pencil on a tablet that I mentioned, but only available for editing if it is a CD ripped by your Unitiserve:-
Bart,
Thank you for your response yesterday. I am not sure how to reply to your post by responding to various points so I am typing this in Text Edit and then hoping to copy!
First of all, I am finally beginning to understand that there are two different types of editing. Now for editing albums that I have edited myself I have looked at Tag (I was very attracted to the word VERY which you highlighted - I need very easy!!!). However, when I googled Tag it appeared to me (though again I could be mistaken) it seemed to be only available for Windows and not for Mac!
Now for editing my own rips to the UnitiServe I am afraid I do not know how to go about it! I have opened n-Serve (showing n-Serve, File, Edit, View, Window, Help at the top of the Window) and then clicked in an album from the list on the left under Albums; but then I don’t know what to do from there!
Thanking you and all for your help and patience,
Kevin.
Yes Kevin, just the same on iPad, but easier to type as you say!
Touch the edit button, this will then allow you to edit.
Next step is to touch on the item you wish to edit, and you can then delete or type what you want to appear when you ae looking in the Nsearching when searching for something to
play, or while playing something for example).
Give it a try!
I can't help you on the Mac as I don't have one, but honestly, it is very straightforward on iPad to do simple metadata editing, so you should be fine with this method.
By the way, I forgot to add that I can no longer find the "Edit Metadata" option! Yesterday I came across it but it was greyed out!
Kevin.
Kevin, you can use the N-Serve app on an iPad. It looks slightly different to the iPad/iPhone version as in ChrisH's screenshot, but you can still use it by hitting the edit button. N-Serve for Mac is a bit different again, but all versions can be used to edit. If there's a lot to do I'd tend to use the Mac, just because it's a bit easier with a larger screen and keyboard.
