Newcomer trying to edit data and completely lost!

Posted by: Kevin Joseph on 01 August 2015

Hello, first of all please forgive me if this is in the 'wrong place'! I am trying to edit data in n-serve on my iMac and am completely lost. Can anybody possibly help me with a screen share? I am not very good at understanding and following written instructions (and I cannot blame that completely on my old age I am afraid!). If that is not possible, I would be very grateful for any other kind of help.

Thanks,

Kevin.

If the edit option is there on the iPad app, it should be there on the Mac version too - there's something very odd going on if it's not! Is the 'edit metadata' option not showing on the drop-down list as discussed yesterday?

Have a look a ChrisSUs post from yesterday, the one with the screenshot.

Control click on the album or track you wish to edit and you will get the drop down list which includes Edit Metadata.

Click on that and you get a box with various fields you can edit.

Maybe try that on the Mac?

And do you think you have it working for you on the iPad now?

For big edits the Mac will definitely be your option, but maybe get used to what you can do in the iPad first to build up your confidence with the process?

Sorry, I had forgotten about the control key - however, having now remembered 'Edit Metadata' is greyed out!

If it's greyed out for a particular album, you should find that if you view the same album on the iPad app, the edit button will not be there.

Yes, now that you point that out I see it. And why is that? Does it simply mean that you cannot edit that album at all?

Unless there's something very odd going on, it means that these albums are downloads - or at least, they are in the Downloads folder on your Unitiserve. So they can't be edited in N-Serve.

If you have the original CDs, rip them again and you should get an editable version.

Thank you. I shall try that and let you know what happens.

Kevin if you Google "Tag for OS X", you will find it on sbooth.org

Note: The best practice is to edit the music you've downloaded BEFORE moving it to the UnitiServe.  If there are files on the UnitiServe that you want to edit, go ahead and do it, but realize that the UnitiServe must rescan and update its database before those changes will be seen.

All the best,

Bart

Bart, thank you again (your response came at 4 am my time, which made me realise that people responding could be doing so from quite a different time zone from mine!).

I eventually found the OS X version of Tag so which do you recommend Tag or Metadatics? Whichever I buy I shall need to find someone to help (as you may have gathered from the beginning I am not at all clever with computing!) when it comes to editing before moving to the UnitiServe (thanks for that tip).

If I re-rip my CD's (slowly, slowly over time) can I edit them on the computer? As for editing past downloads, is the information on my computer where I can edit and then redownload to the Uniti; or is that simply too late and therefore impossible?

Kevin.

Kevin, no need to re-rip IMHO.  (You do have more control over metadata on your own rips vs uServe rips, but me - I'd not re-rip for this reason; the uServe displays my music just fine and I can do basic edits with n-Serve.  And if you really want to be able to fully edit your uServe rips yourself, you can convert them to flac, then copy them to another location, and then use Tag or Metadatics on them.)

Tag is easier at first vs. Metadatics.  I'd start with Tag.

Thanks again Bart. All I have to do now is get your response translated into English!!!!! My Eng/Irish sense of humour. Seriously, when I find someone who can help me put all this into practice I shall do so. My Naim dealer here has a 'computer assistant' and when he gets back from holiday I shall ask him. (Although he is not very familiar with the Mac side of things!) I shall let you, and everybody else, who has helped, know how I get on.

By the way, I am not used to the Forums. Have I somehow been blocking up things on the Forum with all my questions or I am in some kind of separate 'topic' from everything else that is going on in the Forums?

Thanks for the answer re Tag and all the other help.
