Streaming DSD files from NAS (LaCieD2Network2) to ND5XS
Posted by: BENEDICT on 02 August 2015
When saving DSD64 to my NAS, such a fil does appear on the NAS folder from Imac.
But it doesn't appear on my Naim app nor the Nd5xs display screen.
The NAS is connected to an Airport extreme that is wired to the Nd5xs
My question : is the LacieD2Network 2 compatible with such files ?
Thanks for replying
Is there a UPnP server installed on your NAS? If so, the streamer should be able to see it. Do you have other stuff on the NAS that is OK (CD rips or downloads?)
Yes it's a UPNP NAS connected to airport extreme > wired with the Nde5xs
A lot of music are saved on ( flac wav 24/96-192) and there is no problem for reading them.
Please note I can play .dsf files saved through Usb without any difficulty.
and I can enjoy what such files can bring
Would it be a transcoding problem ?

I think that answers your question ............ LacieD2Network 2 does not handle DSD
Its not a transcoding problem, you cannot transcode DSD.
you cannot transcode DSD.
why? It is technically possible. Not sure about legality.

Why would it not be legal? The original file isn't changed

My Unitiserve is also unable to play DSDs. I just put them on a USB stick and plug that into the streamer, which is kind of OK as long as I only have a very small collection of DSDs.
Are you able to add a different UPnP server to your NAS, I think some can handle DSD?
I know that minimserver can stream dsf or dff DSD files but must be configured to stream them as DoPwav files (the wav file just contains DSD data rather than the usual PCM data)
If you can use minimserver then use minimwatch to configure the properties> system tab> stream.transcode to: dsf: DoPwav or dff: DoPwav depending on which type of DSD files you are using.
(Note there should not be a space between the "dfs:" and the "DoPwav" or the "dff:" and "DoPwav" but if I type a colon and a D after each other it comes out as a smiley face like this .)
dBpoweramp does the same ........ copy/paste ..........
DSD .......... It is also possible for this codec to embed the DSD signal in a DoP file (DSD over PCM). The idea behind DoP, is that DSD can be passed to a compatible DAC, the player and transport need not know about DSD, as it is passed as PCM. To create a DoP DSD file, enable DoP embedding, then convert a dsf or dff file to FLAC or WAVE, this file when played though a compatible dac will decode the DSD. See the Advanced Options section for details on how to configure.

and of course when the Naim streamer outputs DSD data, it does so via the SPDIF out using DoP. This allows the NDX to send DSD streams to DACs like the Hugo.
The DoP terminology is slightly misleading as no PCM is used at all, it simply is borrowing the PCM stereo 24 bit file and framing transport structure and completely remapping it so as to carry the DSD bit stream plus identification.
Interestingly if you used DoP using FLAC I think you would get a worthwhile data saving given how DoP works. I have seen no software that does this however

Thanks for your explanations a bit too technical for me but very interesting.
Therefore as bottom line, a portable USD device could be used to save them and play through usb
Yes, but Naim streamers don't generally support USB hard drives, only 'memory stick' devices.
Or sell / use the LacieD2Network 2 for something else & buy a NAS that is recognised in the audio world as a fully functional NAS & that does handle DSD - & most all do - Synology, QNAP etc using their own UPnP or Minimserver or Asset etc

They do. I have used a 1tb with uq2. Disk has to be formatted fat32.

Edit:Sorry uq2 not a streamer.

That's good to know, Erich - I believe the official line from Naim is that they aren't supported, meaning there's no guarantee they'll work.
I would have thought this applied to all streamers, weather separate ND or Uniti?
