Football season 2015/16

Posted by: MDS on 02 August 2015

Well the new season beckons, though I see some unfortunate clubs have been playing Europa League qualifiers already (no summer hols for the Hammers). So I thought I’d kick off (pun intended) with some predictions.

In the PL, as I did last season, I’m going to tip Chelsea to win the title.  Mourinho has freshened his squad, it’s a bit younger and I suspect he has retained the all-important hunger. I also won’t be surprised if Mourinho gets Falcoa to fire in the way we know he can.

Man City/Man U and Arsenal to fight out the next three places.  I further predict mid-table mediocrity to Liverpool (if so, Rodgers may not survive past Xmas), while Palace enjoy a season in the top half.

At the bottom, I hope Bournemouth survive while my head says not but whatever happens I hope the club and their fans have a thoroughly enjoyable season. I think Watford will drop with the other relegation place being between Leicester, Norwich and Villa.

I think the Championship is very hard to call.  If QPR retain Charlie Austin I can see them bouncing back. I don’t see Burnley doing so. Nor Hull. Ipswich might make it this time.

Of course I’m hoping my lot will get promoted out of League Two under our new manager Paul Cook but I’ve been following them for long enough to know that disappointment is very possible again.

On reflection, while it would be sweet for the Foxes to win the Premiership at Old Trafford tomorrow or at Chelsea on the final day, given those clubs are true Premiership 'grandees', I suppose for the fans it would be best for them to do it at home against Everton next week.  That way the maximum number of Leicester fans will be able to have that unforgettable thrill and be able to say 'I was there'. I wonder what the football gods will decide?

Hmmm.....

So, if Tottenham loose tomorrow................?

.....then Leicester win the league and are presented with  the trophy at their next home game, against Everton, next weekend.

Yes, but notquite the same as "I was there, at the winning match, and saw the winning goal".

Either way, it would be a nice to see a new league champion.

There was an unusually high demand today at Old Trafford for that bane of modern day football - the half and half scarf

Having now seen Leicester and their "tactics" live this season I'd - in a Kevin Keegan accent - "love it" if Spurs beat them. Sadly that is a longshot now.

Yes, Don. I might have got it wrong but I don't this Spurs have won at Chelsea in getting on for 30 years. So the romantic in me hopes they can correct that tomorrow allowing Leicester to win it themselves next week against Everton in front of their own fans.

Indeed, for all Sky Sports hype this is what makes it the best league in the world.

Oh I do hope to see score lines like Real Madrid 1 Leicester City 2 next season.

Mind you well done Spurs too, they would have bitten your hand off if offered runners-up spot at the start of the season

I am a Spurs fan and although a little disappointed I am delighted to see Leicester win the league. What a remarkable achievement. Well deserved. It was amusing to see Chelsea fans celebrating as if they had won the league after securing the draw.

Absolutely fantastic that Leicester have finally won it.

Oh you beauty, Leicester City! A monumental achievement. Surely the biggest moment in the club’s history. An achievement that will also give hope to every fan of ‘ordinary’ teams. And isn’t it nice to see Claudio R win this? A true gentlemen of the game. Sometimes nice things happen to nice people.

The whole city of Leicester deserves to get thoroughly drunk with celebration tonight.

Nice to see Pochettino being so gracious towards The Foxes in his post-match interview. Well done that man. I'm sure that young Spurs team will be even stronger next season.

Oh, and congratulations are also due to Burnley for achieving promotion back to the Premier league this evening. It's not easy to bounce straight back.

Midwives at Leicester Royal Infirmary are going to run off their feet in the first week in February, 2017.

Surely one of the greatest achievements in English football history, and well deserved too

Yes, Fabio.  This monumental achievement has a strong 'made in Italy' contribution and it's been nice to see the acknowledgements in Italy celebrating Claudio. A seemingly modest man by nature who seems a little uneasy at all the attention but he thoroughly deserves the recognition.

So after tonight's Champions League semi-final result do we have to acknowledge that Madrid is the capital of European football?

I live 5 kms away from San Siro Stadium in Milan, maybe I'm going to take some pics of the Spanish supporters on 28/5.

This upcoming championship being the second Madrid derby in three years would suggest a yes! It may be open to debate, but a case could also be made for La Liga fielding the top three teams in Europe.

Obviously Burnley is the real capital. We make a profit too. But don't expect to see much in the papers, not fashionable enough. Bad day to win promotion the same day Leicester won the Premier by default. Hats off to them though. They looked like a Prem side 2 years ago when we both went up.

Well congratulations on winning the Championship today, Bodger.

Enjoyed watched Sky's coverage of the Foxes being presented with their trophy after their emphatic sweeping aside  of Everton.  Surreal. I wonder how many of their fans have secretly wondered if this was all a 'Bobby Ewing moment-in-the-shower' and they will wake up and realise it's all been a dream?

What a deflating day yesterday was. The Boleyn (pub) was rammed when we got there at 11.30, there was a big impromptu party in the sunshine by the Bobby Moore et al statue on the Barking Road. The atmosphere inside the Boleyn (ground) was electric, especially at half time.

Visits to the West Ham Social Club, the Black Lion and the Victoria after the game were similarly electric. I have a very sore head today.

Yet inbetween all this was the poorest performance we've put in at home all season. So West Ham. Fade and die and all that...
