Superuniti 4.3 upgrade- USB driver issue?

Posted by: GTE on 03 August 2015

I am attempting to upgrade my Superuniti to Firmware 4.3 via my iMac desktop but have run into an issue. I have downloaded the Silabs USB to UART Bridge VCP driver to the IMac, however it does not appear as an available USB serial com recognized by the iMac (eg. As per page 3 of the Naim technical notification for the 4.3 update).

I am hesitant to proceed further until I get this sorted out. Anyone have a similar issue or advise?

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with doing this on a MAC, but on my windows PC I had to connect up the unit to be upgraded to my PC and let the PC detect it before the driver was activated.  If the driver never gets activated, you can't start with the update anyway, so I think you are fine to go ahead, run the downloaded update file and follow the instructions that Naim gives. If the USB driver really doesn't work, you will get stuck there before anything is actually done to your Superuniti.

i hope this helps

The way it works on the Mac (doing this from memory) is that even with the driver properly installed, the device doesn't appear in the drop-down list in the Naim Updater software unless/until everything is connected up.  There is NO indication that the stuff has been installed correctly until you connect it all up and run the Naim Updater.

Connect your Mac to your SU via the USB cable, THEN start the Naim Updater software.  When you see the dropdown list to select a port . . . in there you should see the driver listed.

See if that works!

....and you need both the PC and the Superuniti to be connected to the Internet as well as connected with the USB cable......

Naim has explained that this is because some of the update is delivered over the USB cable and some over the Ethernet connection.

good luck, but it should go fine.

best

David, Bart,

Thanks to you both for your advice and input! Just successfully completed the upgrade  and everything works like a charm.

Glad you're sorted.

Mac's don't go wrong ('cause Apple say so), so they hide all the details you don't need to see.

If you connect the USB cable and then run the system profiler as indicated in the PDF you will see that driver listed.

I was as confused and installed the driver twice

That makes a little more sense.  I ran the profiler numerous times...without the usb connected to the Naim player...and it showed nothing.
